Peppermint 3
« on: August 19, 2013, 01:01:41 pm »
Mark, I will be ready about 2 pm- just have to wash my hair and have some brunch. Got up quite late- had terminal commands going round in my dreams LOL- bit tired so got up rather late.

P.S- the Star Trek HD works on the laptop on m player! Even the Enterprise ones which smudge on this netbook.

See ya later.
My computer: Asus notebook x102B, running on Peppermint 9.

Enabling the extra software repositories

In the menu, go to System Tools > Synaptic Package Manager, enter your password, when Synaptic starts -

Go to Settings > Repositories .. when a new window opens -

On the "Peppermint Software" tab, make sure ALL 4 boxes are ticked.

On the "Other Software" tab, make sure all boxes are ticked EXCEPT the cdrom:[Peppermint 3_Three_ - Release i386 (some-date-or-other)]/ precise

Click Close

Click the Reload button on the Synaptic toolbar.

Close Synaptic.

(It's IMPORTANT that you close Synaptic, or the commands in the next stage won't run)

Tell me when you're done, or if you have any problems.

OK .. make SURE Synaptic is closed, then open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run the following commands

Best to copy/paste commands into the terminal from now on:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get upgrade
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Tell me when you've run those 3 commands .. or any errors

Ok, think this is ok so far except asking about the disk space:

78 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 5 not upgraded.
Need to get 175 MB of archives.
After this operation, 43.2 MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]?

Well it was..until the battery suddenly died!!! And must be a Firefox thing because when the netbook battery dies without me seeing it and I plug it in all the pages I had up are still there. Also the netbook has a warning box to tell me to plug in the charger but this one doesn't.

Got this in the terminal:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

Make sure you're connected by power lead for now and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo dpkg --configure -a
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get upgrade
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

OK, as it will have installed a newer kernel, REBOOT (to load the new kernel).

Once rebooted, tell me what software you want on top of this lot

VLC
Firefox
LibreOffice

eg. do you want

GIMP (Linux Photoshop alternative)

or anything else ?
