Chrome or Chromium.....
« on: May 21, 2014, 02:22:03 pm »
Normally use Chromium on Peppermint 4 with a Firefox backup.

With Peppermint 5 on the horizon would it be a good time to change to Chrome.

What would be most suitable for the new O/S.

Any thoughts.

I'm sure Mark will correct me if I'm wrong, but with Peppermint, I think you have to use Chromium to use the SSBs?

Personally I don't see what difference it makes except Flash could a bit problematic with Chromium but I think it's easy to get it working, I'll certainly be sticking with Chromium

Yeah that's right but I'm sure Mark posted instructions on how to get Ice working in Chrome, I'm not sure if it was here or on the Peppermintos forums

Good luck whatever you do

Don't worry about flash in Chromium in peppermint 5 .. it's in hand ;)

As chemicalfan suggests, in Peppermint chromium-browser is a dependency of the ice application .. so removing chromium will also remove ice.

That said, as Emegra suggests .. shortly after Peppermint 5 is released I'll bung a version of ice on the Peppermint forum that has been modified to work with Chrome (ice-chrome)

So the choice is yours.

I agree with Emegra though .. unless you're having problems with chromium and flash .. there's little difference between them.

agree with Jocklad:- bring on peppermint 5. :D

but just what is the difference between chrome and chromium?
I know chromium is open source, but to this end user they are virtually identical, so why the difference?

Keith.

Chrome is basically Chromium with a couple of third party proprietary plugins included (such as Pepperflash which is a rebuilding of the Adobe Flashplayer .. so licensed by Google for inclusion in Chrome only if the user is legaly bound by an end user license agreement).

Chromium doesn't include the third party plugins "out of the box" .. so doesn't require a EULA

So distro makers would have to get users to aggree to the EULA pre-installation if they wanted to bundle Chrome .. even then they may be on the wrong side of the law for "distributing" an Adobe product.

I gather from the Chrome EULA that Adobe would require any distro using Chrome to agree to a bunch of restrictions prior to installation/use .. it's a bit of a legal tangle, and a risk most distro's just won't take.
