Hello, this is my first post. As an introduction, I have been using Linux Mint exclusively since 2010. I migrated from XP onto Mint 9 Isadora and have never looked back. I managed to install my Pixma MG 6150 onto isadora using WiFi. I seem to remember that it was very straight forward.

I have just upgraded to 17 Mate but can not get the printer to work.

On the 'localhost' the printer is featured when I click 'Add'. I found the URL of the printer by plugging the laptop I use into the printer's USB. The drivers are the same ones I used with Isadora.

2 things, when I attempt to print via the USB the printer starts to pick up the paper out of the tray, there is a clicking sound and after the fourth attempt an error comes up saying the tray is empty. The printer works perfectly when plugged into my son's computer (Win 7). When I try to print via WiFi I get errors saying 'Printer Not Found' or 'Printer not Connected' or 'There Was An Error During The CUPS Operation: Broken Pipe.' (???!!?)

Even though I am a long term Linux user I am not particularly knowledgeable about how it all works so if there is a remedy a reply in easy to understand language would be gratefully received!

Thank you.

try this...

Delete all printers currently added to the system

Open a terminal and run these commands in sequence:
Code: [Select]
mkdir ~/printer-drivers
then
Code: [Select]
cd ~/printer-drivers
then
Code: [Select]
wget http://files.canon-europe.com/files/soft40261/Software/MG6100series-printer_driver.tar
then
Code: [Select]
tar xvf MG6100series-printer_driver.tar
then
Code: [Select]
tar xvf cnijfilter-mg6100series-3.40-1-deb.tar.gz
then
Code: [Select]
cd ~/printer-drivers/cnijfilter-mg6100series-3.40-1-deb
then
Code: [Select]
sudo ./install.sh
then follow the onscreen instructions.

For the scanner driver...

open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
mkdir ~/scanner-driver
then
Code: [Select]
cd ~/scanner-driver
then
Code: [Select]
wget http://files.canon-europe.com/files/soft40264/Software/MG6100series-scanner_driver.tar
then
Code: [Select]
tar xvf MG6100series-scanner_driver.tar
then
Code: [Select]
tar xvf scangearmp-mg6100series-1.60-1-deb.tar.gz
then
Code: [Select]
cd scangearmp-mg6100series-1.60-1-deb
then
Code: [Select]
sudo ./install.sh
and follow the onscreen instructions

Thanks Mark, I pasted all the commands into Terminal but after the 'Install' command and my password this happened:

tar.error is not recoverable:exiting now

sudo:./install.sh:command not found

graham@graham-calpella-platform~/printer-drivers $

Any ideas?

Thanks again. Graham.

Mark I had another go with differing result! I opened all the drivers in my downloads.

I have attached the Terminal screenshot. I still can't access the printer. Strangely enough I got straight into it with Mint 9 with none of these problems.

Regards, Graham

Install the  libtiff4 package:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install libtiff4
then try again, with:
Code: [Select]
cd ~/printer-drivers/cnijfilter-mg6100series-3.40-1-deb
then
Code: [Select]
./install.sh

[EDIT]

PS.

In the future it would be better if you copied the text from the terminal and pasted it into your posting rather than attach a screen shot ;)

Hello Mark, Thanks for that but still no joy. I will delete everything and have another go. I am getting a message that the printer can not be detected.

I rather wish now I had not updated the Mint 9 - it used to run like a quality Swiss watch!

Regards.

Do you think it is possible to connect to this printer or is it a matter of complete incompatibility - in other words buy a dedicated printer for Linux that will work?

As far as I'm aware it *should* work .. just a matter of getting things right.

Can you be more descriptive about the message that the printer can't be detected .. what is telling you that ?

Does the printer work if connected via USB cable ?

Sorry that it's taking me a while between postings .. we've been busy testing Peppermint 5 ready for release .. the good news is it's pretty much done now, so I should be around more (touch wood) :)

Thanks Mark,

I have connected the printer via the USB and I get exactly the same messages as the WiFi attempt.

On opening a document, I click File> Print>  a print window opens with a green highlighted message saying:

Canon-PIXMA-MG 6150 unable to locate printer ''canon''

Also a small window opens in the top RHS of the screen saying:

Not connected? Printer Canon-Pixma MG6150 'may not be connected'

As I said I get exactly the same messages when I attempt to connect to the printer via WiFi.

can you connect the printer via USB cable, then open a terminal and post the output from:
Code: [Select]
lsusb

did the printer drivers install correctly when you followed my instructions ?

I don't know whether the drivers installed correctly, I followed your instructions - is there a way to check?

OK, what's the output from:
Code: [Select]
uname -a
and
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep cnijfilter

can you also, unlug the printer from the USB socket .. wait ten seconds .. replug the USB cable, then post the output from:
Code: [Select]
dmesg | tail -n 30
