When this device is plugged into Windows, how does it present itself ? .. as a sound card, or as a mass storage device ?

[EDIT]

and what's the output from:
Code: [Select]
cat /proc/asound/cards

Not the program...

When you plug it into Windows .. down by the clock (system tray) there'll be a panel applet for disconnecting the USB device .. is it listed in that as a "mass storage device" or as a "sound card" or similar ?

OK, I don't think there's any "easy" way to do this...

The snd_usb_audio module doesn't contain the idVendor:idProduct string for that device (0d8c:0131) so has no way of knowing what to do with it (so it appears to immediately disconnect).

I'm not saying it would be impossible .. if you could figure out a custom udev rule(s) .. but it would probably be extremely hard.

I think your best bet is to hope the ID string gets addecd at some point in the future.

Thanks for your time and patience Mark.

Its hardly something that would be in daily use so not worth spending more of

 your valuable time on.

 Thanks again,

 Jocklad  :) :)

If it becomes important in the future, I suppose you could install Windows in a VM with USB passthrough ;)

The whole idea of this was to preserve very precious and irreplaceable Data on a cassette that was recorded 30 years ago.

As I said I have in a roundabout way between Windows and Linux now have this in Mp3 format with plenty of copies.

Thanks to all who helped me with this.

  Jocklad  :) :) :) :) :)

Glad you got what you wanted in the end,

I felt a bit responsible when you bought it on my suggestion and it didn't work with your Linux PC, but it will make me more careful what I suggest to people in future

 Not at all Graeme.

If you had not directed me to the cassette capture machine I would have been lost.

Direct copy from line-out....line-in was very poor audio quality.

With yours and Marks help it is now done.

 Many thanks

Jocklad

I'm a bit late with this, but you might be interested to look at this link: http://linuxers.org/tutorial/ffmpeg-tutorial-beginners for future reference.
I haven't tried it yet but I have the same needs as you and shall give it a go as it seems particularly easy to implement.
