Sweet, thanks for the link, I hoped that I wasn't going crazy!
I'm gonna try antiX at the weekend, as it specifies that only 128mb is required for the IceWM environment they use. I think their repos are pointed at wheezy at the moment, despite the fact that they say they're following Debian testing  ???
I fear it may not be maintained...we'll see if it provides the required functionality, then I'll worry about support (as, support is moot if it doesn't work!)

Sorry, I did see it, but I'm not sure of which RAM is required (will confirm at the weekend when I can lay my hands on the machine)
Thanks for the kind offer though :)

I'm also messing about with an old laptop with only 256mb ram, and I installed Antix it ran smooth enough and quite responsive but hard work is an understatement, couldn't get printer server running, couldn't connect to network shares even after installing a million libraries and packages, so I've give up and installing Wattos which seemed to run ok in a live session although the installer is struggling a bit.

For running a system on as little as 256mb ram I would definitely recommend Puppy Linux or more correctly Tahrpup, After Wattos failed to install I tried Tahrpup and it's utterly amazing how fast this laptop is running and it comes with more bundled software than almost any distro I've seen, (amazing considering it takes up little more than 2gb disc space).

There's even a choice of network managers and I was connected in under a minute, I was even able to connect to my NAS without installing any other additional software (something I've never been able to do with any other distro), cups is installed by default so installing my printer should be easy enough, It's based on Ubuntu so I have the benefit of the Ubuntu repos, it has it's own package manager with probably all the software you would likely use on a laptop like this, including Teamviewer (which you can't get in Synaptic)

I've only had it installed since yesterday evening and so far everything just works although no doubt I'll encounter issues as I go, but I have to say up till now this distro has blew me away

It's also worth noting that Tahrpup also has a non pae version.

PAE isn't a problem, the P4 is covered :)

Slacko Puppy Linux didn't work with the wireless, but I'll give Tahrpup a go :)

@ Chemicalfan

You might wanna have a look at Puppex it's basically the same as Tahrpup with only a few differences, but it has the pcmanfm file manager, and it's just as fast, I have it running on a old laptop with only 256mb ram and it's incredibly quick considering, the only thing it struggles with is video streaming which is no more than I can expect especially considering I have an SIS graphics card

Nice, I might give that a look :)
Gonna see if Tahrpup will play first, still may have issues with the kernel/video drivers.
