Hi guys I am a total non Anorak and need step by step help to load Open office. I have tried repeatedly and just can not do it. I do not know where to type code in or anything will someone e-mail me please and lets start talking over the phone. If you are local to cheltenham England I will gladly buy you a meal and a pint also has anyone writen drivers for HPb3070-b611 printer or know of an old dead simple laser jet mono that I can buy with drivers that work Cheers diggsy

Hi Diggsy, and welcome to the forum

Which Linux distribution/version/architecture are we talking about here ?

eg.
Ubuntu 14.04 64bit

If you're not sure just say so and we'll tell you how to find out.

That said you're going to have to type some stuff into the terminal and post the output back here, but we'll get around to that when necessary.

Drivers for the HP Deskjet 3070 b611 Series are included in hplip version 3.11.10 or later, so may already be installed on your system .. but again we'll get to that once we know which distro/version/architecture you're running.

One last thing .. is there any particular reason you want OpenOffice as opposed to LibreOffice ?

hi bud I'm using ubuntu 32 bit. If I go up to 14-04 will I have to do this again. I have absolutely no idea anf do not know where to type stufff in cheers digsy

So which version of Ubuntu are you on ?

If you're unsure .. hitting Ctrl+Alt+T should open a terminal, then enter this command:

Code Select Expand

cat /etc/lsb-release
and hit enter.

Then copy what's returned in the terminal and post it here.

Sorry i can't do this by phone for 2 reasons

a) it's easier on the forum as you can easily see the commands, and they can be copy/pasted

What's the output from:

Code Select Expand

cat /etc/lsb-release
and is there any particular reason you want OpenOffice instead of LibreOffice

OK, short and sweet answer....

If you want an Office suite and are on Ubuntu 12.04 or later, and have an active internet connection .. open a terminal and run:

Code Select Expand

sudo apt-get install libreoffice
but it wouldn't be advisable to do that if your internet connection is liable to drop out on you

Installing your prinetr driver:

Code Select Expand

sudo apt-get install hplip-gui
same warning applies

open office is compatible with microsoft so people can read my e-mail attachments

what is a terminal how do i open one what do i type in where do i type itwhen i opened ctl alt t all i got was optiplex 960;-s you are talking over my head I am a total beginer in this field and no libre office is not compatible with microsoft. that is why people kep sending back my e-mails as cant read the attachment

When you hit Ctrl+Alt+T .. the window that opened WAS the terminal

In that window I want you to type:

Code Select Expand

cat /etc/lsb-release
then hit enter

Then post back here whatever was returned in the terminal



LibreOffice IS compatible with Microsoft Office as long as you save your documents as .doc and not the default .odt

Open your document in LibreOffice .. then go to
File > Save As

then where it says "All Formats" .. change that to "Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP/2003 (.doc)" then hit "Save"
(you'll have to do the same thing in OpenOffice)
You can even set it to save as .doc by default if you wish

In LibreOffice go to
Tools > Options

the in the left hand column go to
Load/Save > General

and change

Always save as: ODF Text Document
to
Always save as: Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP/2003
(NOT Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP/2003 Template)

then click OK

Now whenever you save a document it should save as a .doc

hi Mark when I go to tools on the top in black then I drop down to options I get a choice of general under libre office or load/save as first sideways arrow under java but nothing about save sas Afraid I'm lost help
