I will be installing mint 17.2 32bit on to a friends computer when I visit them.

The only issue I can find with this is that Wi-Fi dose not work as they connect to the internet via Wi-Fi and there is no cable link available how can I install the driver.

From what I can see on the net the following sorts out the Wi-Fi issue  " sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source "  is it possible to download this to a USB stick and install from that source?

As always thanks in advance.........

You might also need to grab stuff like kernel headers for compiling the driver. It's always a bit awkward to work this out, but apt does provide facilities for doing it. I can't look at the man page right now, but I know that apt-get install has switches for downloading packages but not installing them, then you can use dpkg on the remote computer to install them once copied over.

Not easily .. are you even sure that's the right driver ?

Can you get the output from:
Code: [Select]
lsusb
and
Code: [Select]
lspci -vnn | grep -i net
?

You should be able to get that output from the live CD, no need to install

The computer is presently 5,000 miles away.

I checked on the net and the only issue flagged for installing mint 17.2 was that the wi-fi did not work.

Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG

The listed fix is to enter in a terminal  " sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source "
this makes the wi-fi work without a reboot.

The issue will be that if there is not a Internet connection I can not use this option to update the system.

Can I use the install windows drivers option to get it working?

Well that makes ZERO sense, and highlights why we need to find out the exact wireless adapter that's in the machine.

the bcmwl-kernel-source (wl) driver is for Broadcom chipped adapters, not Intel ones ;)

the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG adapters use the iwl3945 driver

So at this stage is using the windows drivers an option to get a connection?

WHICH Windows drivers ? .. my point is we don't even know which wireless adapter is in the machine.

it's impossible to do any forward planning if we're not even sure which hardware to plan for.

Using the part No. from the laptop the Hp support site gives the following information for Wi-fi adaptors:

Wireless technologies
Intel PRO/Wireless 802.11 a/b/g, Broadcom 802.11b/g

So it seems that there is the possibility that it could be ether one.  Is it possible to prepare for both possibilities.

The people concerned are not very computer aware I will try to get them to obtain which adaptor is fitted by giving exact instructions....... in Vista.

You should be able to prepare for both - the kernel will load the relevant module during boot. But it could be a lot of work for nothing (compiling drivers isn't as easy as using the built-in kernel ones, if they exist). Getting Windows drivers working isn't a simple point & click either, you can get compatibility issues there too.

Gotta ask - what's the scenario here? Is this a machine you're buying from eBay or something? Might be best to wait until the physical hardware is in hand. If you're trying to support someone else through this install, that isn't familiar with Linux, this could be a serious uphill struggle. Best start with a "see what works out of the box with a live CD", you might be worrying over nothing - won't know unless you try

Yeah it looks like they made the model (at different times) with 2 different adapters, so it could be either.

If it's the Intel one, you're in luck .. the kernel contains the iwl3945 drivers out of the box

If it's the Broadcom one, it all depends on WHICH model of Broadcom adapter (actually the chipset).
(that said .. didn't Mint used to have the packages required for the broadcom wl drivers in the ISO [pool directory] .. I'll take a look and let you know)

I'll test it with Mint 17.2 Cinnamon (32bit) .. if that's the wrong version/DE/architecture, let me know.

The laptop is in use by my sister-in-law and her kids and is running Vista basic they do not use it for games and there office package is no longer supported by MS.

As I know more about computers they have asked me for advice.  I run mint 17.2 on a laptop of the same age and similar spec with no issues but not the same manufacture.

As they can not afford a new laptop I will install mint during my coming visit giving them a number of years use from the system.

Many thanks to all so far.

If the specs I'm reading are correct

Core Duo or Celeron
(not a core2 duo)
and
1GB RAM

I'd be considering something lighter than Mint 17 .. something more like Peppermint or Lubuntu

1GB of RAM will likely struggle with a full blown OS like Mint/Ubuntu

Not trying to push Peppermint here .. just saying that Mint might be too heavy, remember that Mint/Ubuntu system requirements are now more akin to those of Win7 than Vista so if it's struggling with Vista......

Agreed, you might get away with 32 bit LMDE Mate (Betsy), but any driver issues might be emphasised by the Debian back-end. If you can get it working, it'll be ok (web browsing will still be iffy due to the low RAM - true for all distros & the modern web). Peppermint is a better fit I'd suggest, should maximise performance

In fact some HP 530's (with Vista basic) were sold with only 512MB or RAM:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/HP-Notebook-1-60GHz-DVD%C2%B1RW-GMA950/dp/B000S0H00K

if that's the case, you're going to want more RAM .. even with Peppermint/Lubuntu

Peppermint will work perfectly in 512MB, but as soon as you open a modern web browser you'll immediately start using tthe swap partition and things will slow down.

Mint/Ubuntu will struggle to even boot in 512MB
