Help Removing KDe Desktop and other
« on: February 27, 2016, 12:25:12 pm »
Hi, I'm a Ubuntu user from Brazil and I really need help with something.
Yesterday I installed KDE using these commands,
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

When I should have used the Ubuntu's programs center. So it was very heavy and I decided to install Gnome, which I did. The problem is that the KDE now opens in the OS login screen replacing the original Ubuntu screen, and I was not able to remove. I started looking for tutorials on line and did these commands to try delete the KDE greeter:
sudo apt-get purge lightdm
sudo apt-get install lightdm
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm

(It show me that I don't have the gdm)
But there was an odd bug here. The KDE screen was not excluded, then it opens the Gnome Login screen (No problem so far), but the Unity option  just vanished! I didn't nothing to exclude the Unity. What should I do?

Is there no option at the login screen to choose a Gnome session ?

First try setting lightdm as the default display manager:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --reinstall lightdm unity-greeter
then
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /etc/X11/default-display-manager
and make sure it reads:
Code: [Select]
/usr/sbin/lightdm
SAVE the file and exit gedit.

Now log off (or reboot) and see if you're presented with the default Ubuntu login screen.

Then maybe you could try purging the PPA you added with:
Code: [Select]
sudo ppa-purge ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports

Or you could try purging the PPA, then reinstalling the "ubuntu-desktop" metapackage.

The 1st command was ok, then the second I saved but it showed:
** (gedit:2734): WARNING **: Set document metadata failed: Não há suporte à definição do atributo metadata::gedit-spell-language
(Translation:There is no support for the metadata attribute definition)
And this:
Updating packages lists
PPA to be removed: kubuntu-ppa backports
Warning:  Could not find package list for PPA: kubuntu-ppa backports

I believe it means that I don't have the kubuntu-ppa backports anymore, but I still see the Kbuntu greeter.

Just to clarify: 1st, I see Kubuntu logo in black, then it opens the gnome login screen, where I have the option between Gnome Classic and Gnome 3...but no Unity or KDE Plasma.

You will still have the folder /usr/share/kde4 as it contains some config files for applications that require KDE config such as VLC/apturl/clementine/etc.

The "kubuntu" files/folders are probably just config files too Us the apps would have been removed rather than purged.

Are you still having any problems ? .. if so, what ?

I was able to return to Ubuntu logo using sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth and sudo update-initramfs -u; I just replaced Kubuntu to Ubuntu and everything is fine now :D. Now I'm trying to place Unity in the login option...I still only have Gnome (...) and Gnome classic there.

Try:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-session
Now see if "Ubuntu" is available as a session from the login screen

After "sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-session" :Os pacotes a seguir têm dependências desencontradas:
 ubuntu-session : Depende: unity-settings-daemon mas não será instalado
E: Impossível corrigir problemas, você manteve (hold) pacotes quebrados.

(The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  ubuntu-session: Depends: unity-settings-daemon but will not be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you kept (hold) broken packages.)

So I did "apt-get install unity-settings-daemon" and then:
Os pacotes a seguir têm dependências desencontradas:
unity-settings-daemon : Depende: gnome-settings-daemon-schemas (< 3.10) mas 3.12.2-0ubuntu1~trusty3 está para ser instalado
E: Impossível corrigir problemas, você manteve (hold) pacotes quebrados.

(The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  unity-settings-daemon: Depends: gnome-settings-daemon-schemas (<3.10) but 3.12.2-0ubuntu1 ~ trusty3 is to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you kept (hold) broken packages.)

I believe it's the same issue posted here http://askubuntu.com/questions/462914/how-to-reinstall-unity-desktop-on-ubuntu-14-04; maybe I'll have to reinstall the OS again.

If sudo aptitude install -s ubuntu-session:

0 upgraded, 2 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
It needs to get 635 kB of files. After unpacking 2,889 KB will be used.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  unity-settings-daemon: Depends: gnome-settings-daemon-schemas (<3.10) but 3.12.2-0ubuntu1 ~ trusty3 is installed.
The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

      Keep the following packages at their current version:

1) ubuntu-session [Not Installed]
2) unity-settings-daemon [Not Installed]

If I say N:
The following actions will resolve these dependencies: Reverse the following packages:
1) gnome-control-center [1: 3.12.1-0ubuntu1 ~ trusty5 (now, trusty) -> 1: 3.8.6-0ubuntu1 ~ trusty2 (trus
2) gnome-control-center-data [1: 3.12.1-0ubuntu1 ~ trusty5 (now, trusty) -> 1: 3.8.6-0ubuntu1 ~ trusty2
3) gnome-settings-daemon [3.12.2-0ubuntu1 ~ trusty 3 (now, trusty) -> 3.8.6.1-0ubuntu11.2 (trusty-upd
4) gnome-settings-daemon-schemas [3.12.2-0ubuntu1 ~ trusty 3 (now, trusty) -> 3.8.6.1-0ubuntu11.2 (tr Leave the following dependencies unresolved:
5) gnome-control-center-data recommends gnome-control-center (> = 1: 3.12.1-0ubuntu1 ~ trusty5)

And if I say yes for this last one:

The following packages will be reversed:
   gnome-control-center gnome-control-center-data gnome-settings-daemon
   gnome-settings-daemon-schemas
The following NEW packages will be installed:
   ubuntu-session unity-settings-daemon {a}
The following packages will be REMOVED:
   libcolord-gtk1 {u}
0 upgraded, 2 newly installed, 4 reversed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
It needs to get 2,835 kB files. After unpacking 15.7 MB will be released.
Do you want to continue? [Y / n /?]

Okay, it looks like it's impossible to have both Gnome and Ubuntu/Unity sessions at the same time, as according to its control file unity-settings-daemon (which is a dependency of ubuntu-session) conflicts with:-

Quote from: unity-settings-daemon control file
Breaks: banshee (<< 0.13.2+dfsg-7), gnome-color-manager (<< 3.0), gnome-control-center (<< 1:3.6.3-0ubuntu35), gnome-screensaver (<< 2.28.0), gnome-session (<< 3.9.90-0ubuntu6), indicator-datetime (<< 12.10.3daily13.03.26), rhythmbox (<< 0.11.5), totem (<< 2.22.0), unity (<< 7.1.2+14.04.20140214.1-0ubuntu1), unity-greeter (<< 0.2.1-0ubuntu1)

Apparently you can have Unity and gnome-session-fallback at the same time, but not Unity and the full Gnome 3 session:

Oh  yes; but I believe I'm not going to return to Unity. I like gnome. I was fearing it would give me some weird bug, but I as far as I saw no issue will happen using only Gnome.   ;)
