Solved. Problems reinstalling Ubuntu
« on: April 11, 2016, 09:09:54 pm »
Hello folks,

I'm trying to reinstall Ubuntu 14.04 but having problems.

When I boot from the disc, I get a message saying that there are multiple operating systems, do I want to install Ubuntu alongside, wipe the disk, or do something else.

I choose the last option. Then I select SDC5 (where Ubuntu is installed), change it to 'use this partition as ext4. I tick 'format the partition' and leave the mount point blank.

I then get a message 'Write previous changes to disk and continue? Before you ca select a new partition size, any previous changes have to be written to disk. You cannot undo this operation'.

If I try 'install now' I get the error 'no root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu.'

Any thoughts please?

Yep, that'll happen if you don't tell it where to mount / ;)

What exactly are you trying to do ? .. install Ubuntu over an old copy ?

Yes Mark,

This is a follow-on from my previous post "no internet connection anymore" (I've learned not to mix topics in one thread!)

I just need to overwrite Ubuntu with an install that can access the internet.

Probably the easiest way to do this would be to boot a LiveCD/LiveUSB and use Gparted to delete the old Ubuntu partition (leaving unpartitioned space on the HDD).

Then when you install Ubuntu it should offer to install Ubuntu to the "free space" ;)

Thanks Mark,

Will that still apply if XP is on another partition? I had wondered whether to use XP to blitz the existing Ubuntu partition then try to reinstall Ubuntu as a dual-boot (pretty much how I installed it in the first place)...

Yep, still applies .. or as you said you could just use XP to delete the Ubuntu partition (leaving unpartitioned space), then reinstall Ubuntu to the "free space".

Thanks.

I'll do one or the other in the next couple of days and let you know the outcome.
