When you say Peppermint 7 stops at startup, what exactly happens ?

do you get as far as the Peppermint splash screen (with the spinner) ?

if so, hit the Esc or Tab key .. is anything displayed onscreen ?

Okay after some googling it seems the detection for the Elan touchpad was only added in the 4.3 or greater kernel.

but the ROG doesn't seem to like the 4.x kernels because of the skylake CPU (this is fixed in 4.5 onwards I think).

There is however a couple of kernel boot parameters that are supposed to work for the 4.4 kernel as used in Peppermint 7 / Ubuntu 16.04 / Mint 18 / etc.

Boot the Peppermint 7 (64bit) LiveDVD/LiveUSB, and when you get to the "Try Peppermint" or "Install Peppermint" screen, hit F6

now hit Esc

Now you should see some white writing at the bottom of screen that ends with:-

quiet splash ---

change that so it ends with:-

quiet splash acpi_osi=! idle=nomwait

and hit enter to boot.

Did it boot ?

Boot the Peppermint 7 (64bit) LiveDVD/LiveUSB, you should be presented with the GRUB menu...

now hit the E key (to edit)

Now you should see some white writing on screen where one of the lines ends with:-

quiet splash ---

change that line so it ends with:-

quiet splash acpi_osi=! idle=nomwait

and hit enter to boot.

Did it boot ?

Just as a matter of interest, does Ubuntu 16.10 (yaketty yak) work, including the touchpad ?
(which theoretically should have skylake support baked in)

You can download the daily build of yakety here:

it **might** be a problem with Rufus .. try something else such as
https://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/
or maybe
https://www.etcher.io/

Have you tried a different USB port ?

Try this ...

Boot the Peppermint 7 (64bit) LiveDVD/LiveUSB, you should be presented with the GRUB menu...

now hit the E key (to edit)

Now you should see some white writing on screen where one of the lines ends with:-

quiet splash ---

change that line so it ends with:-

quiet splash nouveau.modeset=0 tpm_tis.interrupts=0 acpi_osi=! acpi_backlight=native i915.preliminary_hw_support=1 idle=nomwait

the above is all one line, eg.
Code: [Select]
quiet splash nouveau.modeset=0 tpm_tis.interrupts=0 acpi_osi=! acpi_backlight=native i915.preliminary_hw_support=1 idle=nomwait

and hit enter to boot.

Did it boot ?
