It's not a dual boot problem .. it appears to be more a weird UEFI implementation by Acer.

What happens if you select HDD0 and hit enter ? .. are you then offered any options ?

Hi Mark, thanks again. I followed your instruction the efi files were under the HDD0 entry. I saved the changes by hitting f10 to save and exit.
But after shutting down completely its still going to windows 10, anything else I can do? (I'm being upgraded to another new version of windows 10 even
as I am posting this. As usual with no warning whatsoever and no way of delaying. Hope to hear from you.) I'm on a little desktop at the moment so I could follow your instructions for the acer laptop. Yours Norman.

So was "ubuntu" listed (after selecting HDD0) ? .. and did you set it as trusted ?

If so, is 'ubuntu' available now from the UEFI boot device selection screen ?

Hi Mark, yes ubuntu was listed so i went in again and followed your instructions again, probably duplicated what I did previously? but its still
booting straight through to win 10 or macrium reflect. As far as I am aware I set ubuntu as trusted and saved the bios should I go in again
and do it again? Yours Norman

No, but is ubuntu now listed as a boot option when you select the boot device selection screen ?

Hi Mark, here's what I have on the bios boot window:
Boot Mode   [EUFI]
Secure Boot [Enabled]

Boot priority order:
1 USB FDD:
2 HDD: ST1000LM024 HN M101 MBB
3 ATAPI: CDROM: slimtype DVD A DA8A EJH
4 Network Boot IPV4:
5 USB HDD
6 USB CDROM
7 Network Boot - IPV6
8 Windows Boot Manager
9 EFI file Boot 0 - Peppermint

Any help would be appreciated as I'm out of my depth. Yours Norman. I can obviously change the boot order using f5 or f6 would it make any difference?

Suppose it can't hurt to try moving Peppermint somewhere above Windows just as a test, you can always move it back .. but I'm seeing all sorts of problems with getting these Acer ES1's to boot Linux.

It looks like it can be done with some workarounds .. but dual boot may be a problem.

Hi Mark. Success, I moved the boot order in the bios re: 9. Peppermint to number 1 and Windows boot manager from number 8 to number 2. Restarted the
laptop and low and behold I have the Grub menu giving me the choice of Peppermint 8 or Windows 10. Thank you for your patience with me regarding this
foray into the land of Linux. Especially after reading the threads you sent regarding the acer forums. Yours Norman.

Ps I've tried setting an account up as a desktop user without root access but without success, as you know regarding every time I log into your forum I
receive a reminder re: logging in as insane. Remember I've been a windows user for 40 to 50 years? I'll try again.

Ps I tried writing this in peppermint but without success re: bad server configuration. Let the fun begin as you know I've a lot to learn. yours Norman

Great news :)

Now what exactly are you trying to do Norman ? .. Create a second user account ?

Any particular reason why?

Are more than one person going to use this PC, and you don't want the second user to be able to change anything ?

Hi Mark, it's just that I get a warning that I'm logged in as root permanently? even though I added an account (this one) as a desktop user, is it because when
I log into linux forums I only use my original login name and password? do I need to re register with a different login name and password?
In answer to your query no one else will be using the laptops to access the linux forums or anywhere else. I don't want to upset any protocols you have re:
logging in. I do have different laptops for different uses re: travel, photography etc. and am slowly changing over to linux all a few years old now. Am writing
this from an asus eeepc with win7 and peppermint 8 it's good with peppermint 8. Yours Norman.
Ps do I class this dual booting query as solved or do you? Yours Norman

Where are you getting this message about being logged in as root ?

You don't mean my signature on this forum do you ?

As displayed on the purple "Forum Admin" banner at the bottom of this posting ?

If so, that's just a joke in my forum signature and nothing to do with Peppermint (or indeed your forum login) .. LOL :)

[EDIT]

In fact unless you've specifically manually unlocked the "root" account in Peppermint (which by the way is not advisable), for all intents and purposes it doesn't really have one .. Peppermint uses "sudo" to gain elevated privileges instead of having an active "root" account:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo

OK Mark regarding logging in, I kind of get it now, you hit the nail on the head. i do have a problem with the chrome browser in the dual boot situation.
I'm writing this from the asus eeepc. I updated the acer to the tune of 260MB although 6 items failed. I'll contact you shortly re: the message on the
chrome/duck duck go home page or do you want me to set this up as a new query? yours Norman

Probably best to start a new topic with a problem specific descriptive title Norman, this topics title was about getting the dual booting working ;)

I'd also like to keep this topic solely about setting up dual booting on these Acer ES1's because it will be VERY handy for the other people a quick 'Google' suggests have been having the same issue.
