The Peppermint 3 is on a separate, very old Dell used for emergencies only!
The link looks good - you are better at finding these things than I am!

I still think this is hardware.

The Peppermint 3 thing tells us nothing if it's a different PC .. its not knoowing which application is associated with .vob files is irrelevant, it would be easy to tell it to open .vob files with VLC, but VLC isn't playing them.

OK Mark, I'll go ahead and buy the last one that you linked for me and come back when it's fitted and tested.
Thank you for your great help so far.

Yeah that's definitely one of the right models for a T500 according to Lenovo themselves
https://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/solutions/migr-71037
search that page for 42T2543 (section 16)

It's a DVD player, and CDRW (recorder)

How long ago did you install K9Copy?

Apologies for the delay in replying.

The original K9 several years ago, K9 reloaded a couple of years ago. I came across this page

http://tomtomtom.org/k9copy-reloaded/en.html

and followed the instructions on this page

https://launchpad.net/~tomtomtom/+archive/ubuntu/k9copy

Installed and working perfectly on Mint 18

Thank you Mark.
Yes, it's a Thinkpad T500.  I did buy a replacement player a year ago and hacksawed the bezel to fit my laptop - but is was a cr*p Chinese job that was useless so the supplier refunded and I chucked it away.
I chased your Amazon link and it looks just right, except that the advert now says: No sellers are currently delivering this item to your selected dispatch location in the UK - Mainland[/i].
Isn't that always the way!
So far I've tried the one DVD in two Ubuntu and one Peppermint machines and none of them play it no matter what I do.  It was a second-hand one from Amazon, though looks OK.
Changing the DVD works fine with a bit of persuasion on a DEll Latitude D505 running Peppermint but the Lenovo T500 won't even try unless I click on a *.VOB file in Nemo, when VLC then tries to play it (without sound, of course) but is jerky and very pixelated and the rest of the machine is ~ unresponsive.  In fact the Lenovo won't shut down now - the Ubuntu dots just keep cycling.  Doomsville, as we say in the trade!
So looks like a new internal or external player is required.
I shall continue playing for a bit to refine the decision - see you later.

Off topic but just for info:
I had this self-same message when ordering some Powerline adapters.  I just went through the ordering and payment process as normal and the items were delivered, no bother - and a full week ahead of schedule!  ;)  It may be that Amazon might be a bit slow in updating the status on some pages?  Just a guess but worth a try?

Thanks, Rich.   When I went back to the site the warning had gone so I ordered one - so you were right.
The snow slowed it up - probably at my Post Office by now.

Hi Mark.
The new DVD player arrived just now.  It plays slightly better than the old one in that the pictures are not pixelated (so your advice was good there) but the other behaviour is just the same:
  • it displays one frame at a time, with increasing time between frames and frequent cessation of DVD rotation, then hangs completely
  • rapid and continuous SSD disk access even after the DVD player has wound down
  • the machine freezes and requires a hard reboot.
Same for all DVDs.
I did try removing the DVD during a pause in SSD disk rotation and the frequent SSD access did gradually reduce to normal.
To my untutored mind his really does look like a s/w issue, especially as DVDs play on my very old Peppermint 3 machine but not on either of my Ubuntu 16.04s, one of which is ~brand new - see my post #27.

Any ideas would be very welcome.

The output is :
keith@T500:~$ mount | egrep 'udf|iso9660'
/dev/sr0 on /media/keith/A_BUNCH_OF_AMATEURS type udf (ro,nosuid,nodev,relatime,uid=1000,gid=1000,iocharset=utf8,uhelper=udisks2)
keith@T500:~$

Oddly, inserting the disk did not even start VLC player.  Even more bizarrely, the DVD I inserted wasn't  A_BUNCH_OF_AMATEURS but a quite different one.

I tried another thing.  I used VLC to record some non-copyright video from the web and saved it successfully, but VLC wouldn't play it.

Ah, me!
