Yes, Mark - that worked fine and the system is still running.  I shall now try a DVD.

The DVD is running well !!!***.

It occurs to me that both this T500 and my desktop were installed from the same USB live disc.  Might that have been at fault?  The MD5sum was OK.

You have spent an inordinate amount of your time on this problem, Mark and I am very grateful for your valuable help.
I shall need to do the same to my new desktop system - if I can unravel those of your instructions that did the trick.

No probably nothing to do with the ISO .. just a simple setting in VLC to make it more compatible with your hardware.

If I'd have known VLC wasn't playing other videos I may have come up with this earlier .. but I couldn't see the wood for the trees .. I was thinking "DVD issue" rather than "Video issue".

Oh well, sorted now .. and you have a spare player too :-[

On the other machine, you probably only need to do what's in this posting:
https://linuxforums.org.uk/index.php?topic=13309.msg108599#msg108599

But gimme a shout if that alone doesn't solve the problem.

UPDATE
Applying the method to my newish desktop fixed VLC on that machine, too.

To summarise for our readers:  if your VLC is not playing DVDs try the fix at https://linuxforums.org.uk/index.php?topic=13309.msg108599#msg108599.
