My wifes laptop recently went in to get the screen fixed and it came back not working.
The repair report: 'What we've done... We have repaired the parts listed below. TO HELP PREVENT ISSUES IN THE FUTURE WE HAVE ALSO RESET THE INCORRECT SETTINGS TO DEFAULT. Cleaned your heatsink & fan and tightened some loose screws. We then ran some system checks to ensure your issue has been fully resolved.

nice that they don't tell me exactly WHAT settings they have reset.

Because of their tinkering with things they had no need to tinker with as all they needed to do was replace the laptop lid & screen, I am now unable to connect wirelessly to the internet.

The laptop is an ASUS Notebook X541B running Kubuntu 16.04

1) It could be that they have just physically turned wifi off. Make sure that it is physically turned on.

2) What is the output of: lspci | grep Network

What's the output from
Code: [Select]
lsusb
and
Code: [Select]
lspci -vnn | grep -i net
and
Code: [Select]
sudo rfkill list
and
Code: [Select]
iwlist scan
as well as checking wireless isn't disable by a hardware switch (or key combo), check it hasn't been disabled in the BIOS.

BTW, if these guys changed some "incorrect" settings, do they understand Linux ? .. I wouldn't have expected PC World techs to.
(or are you dual booting? .. if not, it MAY suggest they changed some stuff in the BIOS)

If it's not something daft like wifi switched off or a matter of signing in to your network then personally I would take it back to PC crapworld and tell them to fix it, they had no right pissing about with the way you had it set up they were only asked to fix screen.
"We have repaired the parts listed below. TO HELP PREVENT ISSUES IN THE FUTURE " were you charged for this or was it in with the price?it stinks of them bumping up the price of repair. Would you allow a garage to replace tyres on a car if fixing the windscreen"TO HELP PREVENT ISSUES IN THE FUTURE" of course you wouldnt.
One of my pet hates are shops that think they are always right and trying to hide behind T&c's thinking that it overules Consumer rights act 2015  which was was sales of goods act.
Sorry rant over.grrrrrrr

No, but it stops trying to constantly connect and report no wireless connection.

Do you have more than one wireless network configured in network manager ?

I realise that, I just wondered if you also had 2 (or more) wireless profiles configured in networkmanager.

You might want to change your routers channel to say channel 3, 4, 8 or 9 because someone else close to you is also using channel 1

and check if that makes a difference.

Is 16.04 particularly problematic? Would an upgrade to 18.04 be better?

Since getting the laptop back there's been quite a few updates and the wireless problem seems to have fixed itself!!!
