Card reader (SOLVED ish)
« on: December 01, 2018, 08:27:37 am »
Plugging card reader into Mint 19 gives me a recognition sound albeit slow but then no card is detected or shown to be mounted.I have checked that in the settings it's set to automount but still only sound when plugging and unplugging card reader. The card reader is not listed under devices I'm sure it's probably something simple but I have yet to find an answer that works.
ps
The card I'm trying to read is a XD card.
Thanks.

What's the output from:
Code: [Select]
lsusb
and can you also unplug the card .. wait 10 seconds .. replug the card .. then post the output from:
Code: [Select]
dmesg | tail -n 40

I assumed when you said "Plugging card reader into Mint 19" you were referring to a USB card reader ?

Will it read anything else, such as an SD card ?

The reason I ask is because this repeated message:-

Quote
[  977.966234] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] tag#0 Add. Sense: Incompatible medium installed
[  977.966237] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] tag#0 CDB: Read(10) 28 00 00 3e 7f 80 00 00 08 00
[  977.966239] print_req_error: I/O error, dev sdb, sector 4095872

Seems to suggest there's an input/output problem with reading the card.

You might want to copy off all the files in Windows, then reformat the card in your camera.

See if Linux now recognises the card ?
(or still throws that error in dmesg)

Still nothing and still not listed under device even though it looks like Linux is now seeing it as mass storage  device
dmesg | tail -n 40 ......producers this result which is different to first result, maybe we're getting somewhere?

Are you using any USB extension cables ?

Have you tried another cable ?

Have you tried another USB port ?

Is there a BIOS setting to limit the USB speed ?

It's still showing "print_req_error: I/O error, dev sdb, sector 4095872" (and other read errors) and apparently disconnecting .. which suggests a problem with the card itself (or possibly the reader/cabling)

Not using extension tried different ports as I've said Mark it works on two computers one using W8 and one using W10 so can't see how it could be cable /reader/ card/usb  problem?
It's no big deal Mark as I can get around the problem with windows but if your happy to keep working at it then I'll happily continue with trying to solve the problem.

Update on card reader....It appears that mint doesn't like the xd format of a memory card because when I tried it with a Sd card in the card reader it automatically asked me what I wanted to do with it.Just as well I'm selling the camera that takes xd cards and buying one that uses the more modern sd.
Thanks again Mark for trying.
