Upgrading LM 17.3? [Solved]
« on: July 31, 2019, 10:44:16 am »
I use 17.3 exclusively but I gather that it is no longer supported so what are my options for upgrading to the latest version of LM or would I have to do a fresh installation of whatever is best?

Whilst it is THEORETICALLY possible to either

a) upgrade Mint
or
b) keep your home folder (if it's in a separate partition).

Personally I'd ALWAYS suggest you do a fresh install.

Reasons .. if an in-place upgrade goes wrong you could loose data and it tempts people to overlook backing up important data first.

Even keeping a home partition/folder comes with risks, it may contain conflicting hidden config files.

And when you think about it, by the time you've backed up any data you can't afford to loose to external drives and removed any hidden config files, you may as well just do a fresh install and copy back your data from the backup.

A fresh install is also forces you to think about what you'd need to keep, so also a good opportunity for a cleanout.

There ARE some things you may want to copy to your backup, such as your web browser config/profile folders and possibly your email config/profile folder .. but now's the time to consider that.

ALL versions of Mint are now based solely on Ubuntu LTS bases, so yes 19.1 is based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

Also FYI, Mint 19.2 has just been release and is also based on 18.04 LTS

I take it you still have Mint 17 installed ?

If so, copy the Mint 19 ISO to your hard drive .. then look in the main menu for "USB Image Writer", and use that to write the ISO image to your USB stick.
