Very Slow Boot
« on: September 08, 2019, 05:31:36 am »
Hello!! First post here. I have been playing around with linux for about 6 months now. Decided to play around with triple booting and I actually got it haha.
I am having a bit of a problem with my Mint not booting very fast. I have a HP Pavilion 15-t. Today I just upgraded from a mechanical HDD to a 1TB Samsung Evo 860 SSD. I have Windows 10, Mint, and Kali installed. Kali and Windows boot really fast now and I don't have any problems. Mint, on the other hand takes a few minutes and is actually slower than when I had my HDD installed. I ran
dmesg:     http://m.uploadedit.com/bbtc/1567916569189.txt
systemd-analyze critical-chain:  http://m.uploadedit.com/bbtc/1567916652578.txt
systemd-analyze blame:            http://m.uploadedit.com/bbtc/1567916676327.txt

My kernel is 4.5.0-60-generic
It probably has something to do with the swap or something. IDK
Oh, here't the blkid: http://m.uploadedit.com/bbtc/1567916962151.txt

Thank you guys so much in advance!!

Okay looks like your /etc/fstab entry for the swap partition's UUID is wrong .. the UUID probably changed during the drive exchange.

We'll then also need to fix the entry in your /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume file to match.

Run:
Code: [Select]
sudo xed /etc/fstab
and make it read
Code: [Select]
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>

UUID=34e5f0cb-4239-472a-bec3-98646ca9e3ef / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1
# UUID=77A3-530E /boot/efi vfat umask=0077 0 1
# UUID=65ad16d9-0930-431b-86d9-bf7d123e7082 none swap sw 0 0
UUID=77A3-530E /boot/efi vfat defaults 0 1
UUID=66ed2cb6-18e8-411b-8186-e9d28fe8a377 none swap sw 0 0
SAVE the file, and exit the text editor.

Back in the terminal run:
Code: [Select]
sudo xed /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume
and make it read
Code: [Select]
RESUME=UUID=66ed2cb6-18e8-411b-8186-e9d28fe8a377
SAVE the file, and exit the text editor.

Now REBOOT to test.

Now post the output from:
Code: [Select]
swapon -s
and
Code: [Select]
free -m
so we can see if swap got mounted properly.

It is a little faster but Windows is still booting faster than Mint

Code: [Select]

Code: [Select]

Systemd-analyze for my Kali distribution shows:
Code: [Select]
Startup finished in 4.382s (firmware) + 2.384s (loader) + 4.001s (kernel) + 5.429s (userspace) = 16.197s
graphical.target reached after 5.417s in userspace
So I know Mint can be a bit faster than it is haha

sda1: Bootloader
sda2: Linux Mint
sda3: Dumb extra partition for Windows 10 (bootloader files??)
sda4: Windows 10
sda5: I don't know why this is there (Windows related)
sda6: Kali Linux
sda7: swap

You guys know more than me, but I just wanted to try to give as much info as I could.
Not to get sidetracked, but:
1) Why is there only one linux-swap when I have 2 Linux operating systems? Does Kali use it, or just Mint?
2) What happens if I want to add to my ext4 partition for Mint? I don't see how I will be able to resize it since it's locked in between Bootloader and Windows.

As you don't seem to be using BTRFS, and there's a 31 second delay in dmesg between the btrfs driver being loaded and sda2 being mounted (probably where the drive is being scanned for non-existent btrfs file systems):-

Quote
[    4.187586] Btrfs loaded, crc32c=crc32c-intel
[   35.357394] EXT4-fs (sda2): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)

try uninstalling the unnecessary btrfs support:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge btrfs-tools btrfs-progs
then rebuild the initramfs:
Code: [Select]
sudo update-initramfs -uk all
Then REBOOT to test.

If that still doesn't help. please post your dmesg output again.

1) Why is there only one linux-swap when I have 2 Linux operating systems? Does Kali use it, or just Mint?

They'll be happy sharing a swap partition, but there's nothing stopping you having separate swap partitions (or indeed a swap FILE for Mint) if you'd like.

2) What happens if I want to add to my ext4 partition for Mint? I don't see how I will be able to resize it since it's locked in between Bootloader and Windows.

Certainly it will be more difficult than if you'd manually positioned it at the end of the drive .. though not impossible, it'll just mean juggling/moving/resizing partitions around on the drive.

I do have to wonder though, what do you plan on doing where 240GB is not going to be enough for Mint ?

To answer your question about the space, I just wanted them to be a little bit more equal. But honestly I have more tools that I use for windows and now that it actually boots in a reasonable amount of time I'm not so worried about windows being my primary OS. But there's still (as y'all know) a LOT of cool stuff that Linux can do and I'd like to be able to get back and forth between them easily.

No, not really. But I have found a couple tutorials and I'll play around with it.
I do remember that there were a bunch of bad sectors in my HDD, so this transfer could have created some issues I guess

Basically you're going to need a LiveUSB to boot from .. have you got access to one ?

Preferably a Mint one ?
