Hmm.  That's disappointing.
Do other things not work, too?  And did Windows 10 work OK?

Wierd!  I have no idea what's going on, Graham.

Is Xubuntu no good for you?  The Forum would be devastated if you go back to Windo$e.
Whatever you choose;  good luck with it.  I am sorry I couldn't help you.

Thanks for those kind words and for all your help. Xubuntu is fine but this computer is not running as it should i.e. no control over the backlit screen, all the font sizes are very small and choice of o/s severely restricted. I thought if I re-install win 10 and install all the supplied drivers from their cd it may just get this comp set up then perhaps Linux in a partition may behave? I could never go back to windoze as an exclusive system, rather use it as a meansto an end.

That sounds like being worth a try, but I've never had similar difficulties, except a previous Windows partition being difficult.  You mentioned, I think, that the laptop was a special build - perhaps that has something to do with it.
Anyway:  best of luck, once again.

[EDIT] Re font sizes:  have you tried Ctrl+

Fixing the fonts should be simple. Click on the Setting Manager in the menu and the first item displayed is Appearance. Run that and click on the Fonts tab to select a default and size.

The backlit screen is more mysterious, but this may help

Having never heard of Clevo, their motherboard, or their computers, I can't say I'm surprised that there may be problems! Installing drivers in Windows will not do anything for Linux, though.

Thanks David, I have sorted the font size now. I'm on Xubuntu, which seems to be working ok. As I said all the other Linux systems I've tried will only connect via LAN. I'll have another go at it sometime...or not!

Keyboard is fine but unadjustable. I looked at the stackoverflow.com recommendations  as to how to fix it but I think it's too complex for limited returns but thanks anyway!

Hello ahead,
this is spence from the peppermint forums. Just wanted to let you know #teampeppermint was experiencing some forum and certificate issues which are currently resolved. As many folks over here well know PeppermintOS under @PCnetSpec's ownership was something of a One Man Operation. His heirs are helping us as best they can in their time of grief to overcome and keep things running over on the peppermintOS forums.

Thanks Spence, so sorry to have heard the sad news about Mark.

Actually, as far as my problems are concerned with trying to install Linux on my new computer I have given up on it. I am returning the machine for a full refund. My brief brush with win10 whilst battling with this problem has comprehensively re-enforced my dislike of anything to do with Gates' rubbish.

The fact remains though, I am still needing a new laptop with no os with a backlit keyboard - Any ideas will be gratefully received! I am relegatd to my old HP Notebook with LM 19.3 and Xubuntu.

New laptops with backlit keyboards seem to be fearsomely expensive - aimed at gamers, I guess.
Being a cheapskate I would always go for a refurbished model, although I appreciate the risks.  But eBay and Paypal have good protection.
eBay examples:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DELL-LATITUDE-7290-LAPTOP-i5-7300U-Quad-Core-8GB-DDR4-256GB-SSD-FHD-Backlit-W10/264660332331?hash=item3d9efc2f2b:g:gHIAAOSw7QdeZQom
It's not easy buying an O/S-free computer - in fact if you ask for one, it's likely the vendor will simply wipe Windows leaving intransigent traces that cause problems.  Despite your experience (which I think was a special build computer?) I wouldn't worry about buying one with W10 on it as the Linux installation has the option for reformatting the disc which will wipe all mention of Windows.

Good luck!

Thanks Keith, I have looked at the refurb option but finding a 15.1''/8gb/backlit screen kit is proving a right pain :(
Onwards and upwards or something!
