I have a HP laptop and want to connect wireless to the internet

How to do this :o ?
I almost  was succsesfull, I did as I done in windows, with my wirelessrouter. But it went wrong and my f12 ledlamp went from white clear to red.
If you understand what I mean :-\

Which distro/version ?

Do you have a temporary wired connection ?
