Perfect Kevin!  Sorry I had confused you (and me).

1. Now use the trick of clicking on [Select] to highlight the following code:
Code: [Select]
cd "/media/kevin/PHILIPS UFD"
2. Then copy it using Ctrl+c.
3. Then paste it into your terminal using Ctrl+Shift+v.
4. Then press the "Enter" key to enter that command (always do this).
5. Then copy all the output and paste it here just to check that you have changed directory.

The last line ought to have looked like:
[email protected]:/media/kevin/PHILIPS UFD$
It seems you pasted the command again.
Now just press the "Enter" key a few times to get a new line and copy/paste the very last line here so I can be sure.

Perfect!!

Now copy the following command in the way you have been doing:
Code: [Select]
ls -l
Then paste into your terminal (Ctrl+Shift+v)...not forgetting to press the "Enter key"!
Then copy all the output from the command line to the last line by highlighting it all then Ctrl+Shift+c to copy it.
Then paste it all here.

Am I right in thinking that the locked folder is
d?????????  ? ?     ?         ?            ? '2 - MINT 19.3  HOME FOLDER - Jan 18th 2021'  ?
I think you said earlier that some files were also locked.

It looks like that folder is too badly damaged but try:
Code: [Select]
ls '2 - MINT 19.3  HOME FOLDER - Jan 18th 2021'
You know how to do this now - and don't forget "Enter".

Hi Keith. Sorry for delay in getting back to you, there are are a number of the folders locked the HOME FOLDER is one of them. The 'xls' files in these folders are 'locked' as 'read only' other files 'doc', 'jpg', 'pdf' are all okay. Here is result of your last command :-

[email protected]:~$ cd "/media/kevin/PHILIPS UFD"
[email protected]:/media/kevin/PHILIPS UFD$ ls -l

OK Goalie.

In some ways it might be easier adopt Wishbone's idea of using the usual file manager to inspect the folders/files, except that it might be hard to show me the results.  So let's try one more thing via the terminal.

Select one of the locked folders shown in your post and then try to go to that folder, as follows:
For example, if your chosen locked folder is 'Laptop HOME FOLDER -Oct  2020', do this:
Code: [Select]
cd 'Laptop HOME FOLDER -Oct  2020'
(using your chosen folder name) then if that works:
Code: [Select]
ls -l | head -n 5
and report the results.  Please remember to include the 'quote marks' around the file name.

Your reply showed a misstyped command so I didn't print it here.
You entered:
[email protected]:/media/kevin/PHILIPS UFD$ ls '2 - MINT 19.3  HOME FOLDER - [email protected]:/media/kevin/PHILIPS UFD$ ls '2 - MINT 19.3  HOME FOLDER -
Is  '2 - MINT 19.3  HOME FOLDER' the only locked folder? If there is another please name it.
