MPV Media player doesn´t play my DVDs on Ubuntu
« on: June 20, 2021, 06:43:10 pm »
Guys MPV doesn´t play my DVDs from my plug in DVD drive on my Ubuntu MacBook. When I launch the icon a box comes up which says to drop files or a URL but there is nothing in it to do it with.
Got 2 Linux computers:
Peppermint on a netbook
Ubuntu on a Macbook Pro
Also got a Chromebook!

Packages needed to play DVD's are in separate repository
You can add the multiverse repository to Ubuntu
Code: [Select]
sudo add-apt-repository multiverse
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt install libdvd-pkg
then
Code: [Select]
sudo dpkg-reconfigure libdvd-pkg

Once complete, reboot your system and you should be able to play DVD in your Ubuntu system.

Had problems with that. When I put in the second command, a load of code, or whatever you call it started loading, then after that had finished a box came up with this message:

This package automates the process of launching downloads of the source   ?
? files for libdvdcss2 from videolan.org, compiling them, and installing    ?
 ? the binary packages (libdvdcss2 libdvdcss-dev).                           ?
 ?                                                                           ?
? Please run "sudo dpkg-reconfigure libdvd-pkg" to launch this process for  ?
 ? the first time.                                                           ?
 ?

So I closed the terminal and opened it again and put in what it told me and then I got this message:

[email protected]:~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure libdvd-pkg
[sudo] password for avon:
debconf: DbDriver "config": /var/cache/debconf/config.dat is locked by another process: Resource temporarily unavailable
[email protected]:~$

So I closed the terminal and opened it again and put in what it told me and then I got this message:

By closing the terminal, you left the process dangling, so blocking debconf.
You should have completed the install in the same terminal.

Try again (after a reboot) and see if that removed the lock
If not then try:

Code: [Select]
sudo fuser -vik /var/cache/debconf/config.dat
Will display the process and ask if you want to terminate it.

Then run:
Code: [Select]
sudo dpkg-reconfigure libdvd-pkg

Hi Sezo.

I use VLC to play music but found that I can drag/drop files into the blank MPV window and they play successfully, despite the MPV window remaining quite blank.
Thinking that your instructions in Post #1 might provide a more informative MPV window I followed your instructions.  My PC told me that the packages were already installed and latest version, but the MPV window remains steadfastly blank, although moving the cursor around does display some info, although very briefly and then back to blankness.  Is this the usual way MPV works?

Keith,

Mpv is a videoplayer, so will only display content when playing that.

The information on the bottom of the window will stay on, if you move (and leave) your cursor there.

Ah ok thanks- will try that a bit later. I haven´t used the Macbook for a few weeks. It´s been in the bottom of my wardrobe! I have just got it out because my Chromebook seems to be on its last update, because I tried to create a post on Wordpress and it said my browser was unsupported! How annoying.

I just put in those commands and not sure what I have to do now. This is the messages that came out of the terminal:

[email protected]:~$ sudo add-apt-repository multiverse
[sudo] password for avon:
'multiverse' distribution component is already enabled for all sources.
[email protected]:~$ sudo apt install libdvd-pkg
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
[email protected]:~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure libdvd-pkg
/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: libdvd-pkg is broken or not fully installed.
[email protected]:~$

I would not win a prize for coding lol.

I don't want to preempt Sezo, but your output you: "you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem".  So in a terminal enter:
Code: [Select]
sudo dpkg --configure -a
Then if all is well:
Code: [Select]
sudo dpkg-reconfigure libdvd-pkg
