install Linux on oldish laptop

I want to install Linux on a laptop which is currently windows XP - I want to ditch windows & just use Linux - what is the best way to prepare the laptop.

Load up the Ubuntu 9.10 install CD and use "run from CD" mode, just make sure everything works as you expect it, 'before' you commit to wiping XP off your hard drive. If it looks good, reboot and pick the "Install" option ..
