The Gimp (beta)
« on: March 04, 2011, 11:44:59 am »
I would like to install The Gimp (beta) on my Ubuntu 10.04 usb but the download centre is only distributing fully supported versions.  I would like to try it and offer feedback as it is an area of keen interest for me.  Advice on installing the latest version to usb would be welcome.
Thanks

Adam

Ahh... I take it you're after the "single window mode" in the GIMP 2.7.1 ?

You *could* download the source code and compile it yourself, but probably the easiest way would be to add the matthaeus123/mrw-gimp-svn/ PPA repostitory.

1) Boot to your *persistent* LiveUSB.

2) If it's installed, you'll need to uninstall gimp-plugin-registry (it's appears to be built-in to gimp 2.7.1, and will cause a conflict if not uninstalled FIRST) so...
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove gimp-plugin-registry

3) Add the matthaeus123/mrw-gimp-svn PPA repo...
Code: [Select]
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:matthaeus123/mrw-gimp-svn

4) Update your package list...
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update

5) If you already have the GIMP installed, just run your Update Manager, or if GIMP isn't install... install it.

Job done.

BTW, don't blame me if you run into issues with other installed software.

Also, look out for the new startup picture in 2.7.1 it's just strange ;)

Nearly forgot... to switch to single window mode, in the GIMP, go to Windows>Single-Window Mode

And for anyone that reads this...

I don't know why they changed this, but if you want to save anything as a format OTHER than .xcf you will have to select File>Export for ALL other formats in 2.7.1, rather than just "Save", or "Save as".

That had me baffled for a while :)
