Just wanted to say a huge thanks for advice given here. I really dont understand linux, or any other language for that matter, but love my AA1. Have been very frustrated the past few weeks after upgrading to Firefox 8. Had to disable flash add on to get firefox to work at all, but of course would not then play any videos/flash content. With flash enabled firefox would freeze as soon as any page with flash encountered. Followed your advice here to 'roll back' to version 7 and now all works perfectly!!! yippee!!

Hi homesteader12, and welcome to the forum.

I really ought to reinstall Linpus Lite and see if I can find a way round this Flash issue with Firefox 8 .. but I *really* don't want to uninstall PeppermintOS, which is SO MUCH better than Linpus Lite, and works perfectly with Firefox 8 and Flash.

If Firefox 9 is still broken in Linpus Lite, I'll see what I can come up with :)

Thanks for the guide.
It works perfectly and the "select" option for the commands is just brilliant

Hi. I just followed the instructions to get FF8 and although I've managed to get the new browser icon I appear to have lost FF altogether. When I click the browser icon it just turns for ages and when I type something into the address bar on
the home desktop it comes back "Could not run command.....Failed to execute child process "firefox" (No such file or directory). Can anyone help please.

Just as a matter of interest, have you tried installing Chrome?
(apart from just being better than FF, it tend to be less prone to installation and maintenance issues)

No, I haven't tried chrome but if someone can give me the instructions for how to do it I'd happily try.

Hi all,
        I've been trying to install Firefox 7 following Mark's instructions. Like others i was unable to bring up the browser and again used the instructions by Mark. Sadly still no luck. After many attempts i have noticed after putting in command

wget -O firefox-7.0.tar.bz2 "http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-7.0.1&os=linux&lang=en-GB"

it then says,

--14:55:18--  http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-7.0.l&os=linux&lan=en-GB
                   => 'firefox-7.0.tar.bz2'
Resolving download.mozilla.org... 63.245.217.36, 63.245.217.36
Connecting to download.mozilla.org|63.245.217.36|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 404 Not found
14:55:18 ERROR 404 Not found.

I guess this is the reason why its not working for me  :-[ Or am i broken?

Any help from Mark or anyone else will be gratefully received. Thanks

I was expecting Firefox 7 to disappear from the the Mozilla site eventually .. I'll upload it to my dropbox and modify the instructions as soon as I'm able.

Something else I noticed .. you may have used a lower case L instead of a 1 in your wget command, as your output states:

--14:55:18--  [snip] ?product=firefox-7.0.l&os=linux&lan=en-GB
                   => 'firefox-7.0.tar.bz2'

Hi,
I am having the same problem upgrading from Firefox 2, after my aspire one crashed and I had to start it from scratch.  I am a complete novice but had previously used the instructions to upgrade to Firefox 4 with great success.

I have tried repeatedly to use the instructions to upgrade to Firefox 7 without success (I have the same error message as 'welshturner'), also trying the upgrade to Firefox 4 instructions again.  But am completely stuck as to what can be going wrong this time.  I checked that I had a 1 in the wget command.

Any help would be great.  Your last post suggests that you are looking at the instructions again.... Is this the case?

Use this wget command instead of the one in the original posting (I'll also update the original posting)

Code: [Select]
wget -O firefox-7.0.tar.bz2 "http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11876059/firefox-7.0.1.tar.bz2"

Yuo're very welcome :) .. and thanks for letting me know it helped.
Hi
I`m new to this forum, I found it looking for a way to upgrade my firefox after my netbook lost a link from the web browser, and kept duplicating Mozilla files. Your instructions were immediately effective-awesome, thank you! I`d got to the point where I was going to give up and buy a new netbook, reluctantly though, as I like the speed of the linux system, and the lack of viruses.

Delighted-thanks!!
