OK, so you never got as far as installing Peppermint ?

This is a message from the LiveUSB saying it cannot boot .. you can try a different application to create the LiveUSB .. or use a different USB stick.

If you search the forum (for "SYSLINUX") you'll see Peppermint doesn't like certain USB sticks .. though *sometimes* people have been able to create a working LiveUSB using a different LiveUSB creator.

I'm sure that was in the Peppermint tutorial ?

Would I be right in assuming when you hit F12, the USB stick is listed as a USB FDD (floppy disk drive) and not a USB HDD (hard disk drive) ?

Follow the instructions here:
http://linuxforums.org.uk/index.php?topic=9707.0

use the second wget command .. and skip the chown command.

That will move you back to Firefox 7 :)

Any problems .. post them in that topic.

Try a different USB creating application before ordering a new USB stick .. if you DO need to get a new one, get a large(ish) one (4GB+).
Mine's a Maxell 8GB retractable (but I can't spot the same one for sale anymore), goodallrounder suggested in this posting:
http://linuxforums.org.uk/index.php?topic=9782.msg70872#msg70872
that the Sandisk Cruzer 4GB worked for him. (but the Cruzer is a U3 stick, personally I'd steer clear of U3 sticks).

I've also sucessfully used one of these:
http://www.ebuyer.com/223410-extra-value-8gb-usb-flash-drive-ev-usb8gb
but I cannot guarantee when you buy one of ebuyers "extra value" USB sticks, they always post the same stick .. I think they change in a kind of "whatever they have at the time" kinda way.

It would be better if you could borrow one, as there are no guarantees the new one will work.

Things to try with your current USB stick -

Depending on its size .. try formatting the USB stick as FAT(16) in Windows before creating the LiveUSB .. or if it's above 4GB, try formatting it as FAT32 in Windows first.

Try another LiveUSB creating application .. there are a few in the Tutorial .. some people have had luck with this one:
http://www.linuxliveusb.com/en/home

Can I ask what make and size USB stick you are currently trying ?

Having problems connecting to my bt home hub too last couple of days, rang bt and they said its common fault with netbooks running linux!! sounds a liitle far fetched as not had problems up to now! Don't know if anyone has experienced the same, and if so what did they do?
very frustrated right now so hope there is light at end of the tunnel,
cheers, john

That's a complete load of rubbish .. but Linpus Lite does occasionally get confused by multiple saved wireless configurations .. you could try deleting ALL wireless configurations (from the network manager), then setting up your wireless again.

When you say "had trouble connecting" .. what does that mean ? .. intermittent drop outs of an active connection, or won't connect at all ?

Or see here how to clear ALL network configs from the command line:

Bt have called me to say homehub does not support linux, total tosh, been using it fine for months!! worse still, been using the free open zone and unable to get firefox, just comes up with crash reporter. maybe i did something wrong when trying to re-install firefox 7 from 8? having to use my much slower windows laptop at the mo, lol, most inconvenient, linux much faster at loading!!
so, not having the best of times at the mo

hi mark
think the problem is the netbook is not reading the encryption, it says waiting for network key, then comes up saying not connected. Also when i am able to get onto the free openzone on the acer, unable to use firefox. when i click the browser icon it comes up with the crash report. would great appreciate any suggestions you can offer, no matter how small, as bt are useless and my only avenue left is this forum. i did try deleting everything from the network manager as you said , when i put details of the homehub back on and clicked connect, it worked. turned off netbook and it wouldnt connect on start up again.
many thanks
john

I think the network problems are actually kernel related if I'm honest. The kernel was updated like last week, and since then I've been experiencing the same problems as well. I'm having to to disconnect it when it's connecting, then reconnect it to actually connect. It'll ask me to provide a keychain password for the network profile, even though I set one last time, kinda annoying but it only ever happens when I switch the lappy off, and then on or disconnect from the router. I'm with Sky and they aren't much better if I'm honest.

Try going over the instruction for installing FF7 again. Read them very carefully.

P.S. Don't let any ISP tell you they don't support Linux, it's total BS.
If you try to look through Windows, you can see what the person is doing.
If you try to look through a Penguin, it WILL bite you.

Think of a kernel as a bridge. It connects the software with the hardware. I.E. Lipnus Lite/Ubuntu with your PC/Laptop/Netbook etc. Linux is the name of the kernel itself, not the actual OS. That's why people sometimes get confused.

I'd recommend trying an older keernel if you've updated in the last few weeks. When you start up your netbook, hold down "esc" and it should bring you to the bootloader''s screen. You'll be presented with a list of options. My memory gets a big foggy here but, there is an option that says something like "use older kernel" or similar. Hit enter on that option then select one of the older kernel and it'll boot into the desktop like normal. If your netbook works and connects to the hub fine, it'll be just an issue with the kernel.

[EDIT] - Oh and just before I forget, I remember last year I tried to update to kernel 2.39.4 or something like that and it broke my network manager wouldn't connect at all, so I had to revert to an older kernel, so this could possibly be a kernel issue.

If you want to know which version your on atm, type in a terminal:

Code: [Select]
uname -a

It'll output something like this:

Linux bally-laptop 2.6.38.8 #2 SMP Tue Sep 6 10:59:46 CEST 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The bit in bold is your kernel.

Linpus Lite is HIGHLY unlikely to have received a kernel update .. it's been out of development for years now.

Have you tried turning encryption off on the router .. if it then connects, try WEP instead of WPA(2).
