Yep, it's a "Cloud" distro .. so most apps are run from the internet, such as gmail, google-docs etc .. but they run in their own window.

There's nothing to stop you installing the full blown apps to the HDD though, such as LibeOffice, Thunderbird, etc. .. as it uses the Ubuntu repos.

OK, on your Windows PC, download the PeppermintOS (two) ISO image from here:
http://peppermintos.info/dl2/Peppermint-Two-i386-06052011.iso
or see here:
http://peppermintos.com/download/

Once you've got the ISO image .. download Universal USB Installer from here:
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/downloads/Universal-USB-Installer/Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.6.9.exe
or see here:
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/

Start Universal USB Installer, and at ..

Step 1 .. In the drop down list, select PeppermintOS (Two)
Step 2  .. point it at the ISO image you downloaded
Step 3 .. Choose your (already plugged in >= 4GB) USB stick .. probably best to let it format it too, so backup its contents first.
Step 4 .. Set the slider to at least a 2GB persistence file .. so you can save changes, like adding the printer driver, LibreOffice, Firefox, etc. to test.
(the persistence option *says* optional, but you NEED one)

Heres a pic of the Universal USB Creator interface

Click Create .. and wait till it's done .. it will take a while, and *may* appear to have stopped .. but just wait till it says it's "Done" .. as in the following pic

Pic of Universal USB Installer .. Installing to USB Stick

Once the LiveUSB has been created, click Close, plug it into your AA1, then turn ON your AA1 .. as soon as you see the first screen (Acer Empowering People), hit the F12 key to access the boot device selection screen .. and select the USB stick as the drive to boot from and hit Enter to boot.

When asked, select "Try Peppermint" NOT "Install Peppermint"

Be aware .. running from a USB stick will be quite a bit slower that running it from the internal SSD after installation, so don't draw any conclusions about speed at this point ;)

I *can* tell you that once installed, it takes about 15 - 20 seconds longer to boot than Linpus Lite .. but once booted it loads/runs applications just as quickly .. and has access to all the latest software.

Once you've got that going .. let me know ..  and I'll tell you how to install your printer drivers, and some other stuff such as LibreOffice, Firefox (rather than Chrome), Thunderbird (if you need it) .. and how to achieve things like auto login, and get the wireless to auto start every boot, etc.
mark, think i'm gonna need a helping hand with the printer driver, just bought an hp email printer so should work fine. is there a way of creating short cuts on the desktop? it doesnt drag and drop like windows i guess?
cheers, john

Am I correct in thinking Peppermint 2 is based on Ubuntu 11.10? If so, I believe the option of creating "shortcuts" or more commonly known in the Linux world as "Launchers" was broken. You can still do it by terminal command though.

Code: [Select]
gnome-desktop-item-edit ~/Desktop/ --create-new

You'll most likely need to install the Gnome Panel dependencies though so:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends gnome-panel

It's probably best if you wait for Mark to come in here. :P

RIGHT-click it in the menu .. then select "Add to desktop" :)

Not Left-click .. if you right-click it, you should see a drop menu with 2 options:-

Add to desktop
and
Properties

[EDIT]

OK, just in case you're clicking the wrong place.

Bottom left of your screen on the panel you'll see a Peppermint icon and the word "menu" .. click that, move your cursor up to "Internet", move your cursor across to "Chromium Web Browser", RIGHT-CLICK your mouse/trackpad, click "Add to desktop" .. there should now be a Chromium icon on the desktop.

[EDIT 2]

For your Kodak ESP 5250 (AIO) printer .. down lad ths file:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/cupsdriverkodak/files/latest/download

then doube-click it .. when gdebi opens, click the "Install" button,

Once that's installed, go to menu>System Tools>Printing to set up your printer.

Just for information, the homepage of the c2esp driver is here:
http://cupsdriverkodak.sourceforge.net/
and files (on sourceforge) here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/cupsdriverkodak/files/

There is also a SANE backend there that may allow you to use the scanner.

It is also (after installing the above driver) possible to set up the printer through the CUPS interface by going to this address:
http://localhost:631
in your web browser.

then going to Administration>Add Printer

BTW, when your browser prompts for your username and password .. that's your Peppermint username and password.

The padlock is there so you don't change any settings by accident, just hit the padlock and change the time to UK settings, usually just enter your location and it'll do the work for you. The hit the padlock again and close the window. Done. :D

You won't progress unless you take risks. ::)

Just use a bit of common sense and read up on things before you do anything system-wise and always backup your backup. You can never be too sure. :P
