Can i share a scanner over the network ?

Hi Guys

I hope this doesn’t come over as a stupid question, but is it possible to scan from a scanner connected to another PC shared on the network?,

the scanner in question is connected to a Windows PC and if possible I would like to share it with one of the 2 Linux PC’s on the network

Any help or advice would be much appreciated

Many thanks

Graeme

Probably.
I was in a similar situation not that long ago, and after much hair pulling decided to invest in a wireless network printer/scanner instead.

Hi SeZo

Thanks for your help

Investing in a new printer/scanner isn’t an option, it’s not really that important to me, it would just be handy if it were possible.

Many thanks

I don’t think it’s possible from a normal AIO that’s shared from a PC.

But there is 3rd party (commercial) software that shares the scanner from a Windows PC … such as - Capturix Scanshare

Effectively you bung it on the Windows PC that the scanner is attached to … then you can scan from within a web browser from allowed local IP addresses.
(so should work with Linux … can’t say I’ve ever used it though)

Hi Mark
thanks again for your input

To be honest this looks like it’s more trouble than it worth, although [according to this tutorial (assuming I’m understanding it correctly ) url]https://help.ubuntu.com/community/sane.d%20tutorial[/url] it is possible, however my problem seems to be the scanner I want to share is connected to a Windows PC.

I could switch things around so that I share another scanner I have connected to a Linux PC so it would be Linux to Linux, but if you think that would be equally difficult or not possible at all I’ll just drop the idea

I was only wanting to do this so my Grand-Daughters PC could have access to a scanner but it’s really no big deal

You can let me know what you think

Off to bed now

Many thanks

Hi Mark

Just had a look at the video

I gotta say it looks good thanks

Graeme

Oh, I’m not saying it’s impossible from a Linux PC … I’d suspect it would be quite easy to write s script that you could remotely run on a Linux PC that fired up the scanner and then offered the scanned document on the network.

Or there may be easier ways … I dunno, never thought about it

I was talking about a scanner on a Windows PC … which is what you said.

I know I only chose the scanner attached to the Windows PC simply because it’s closer to the PC I want to use it with

Jeez … you’re as lazy as I am

Your link suggests it’s easier than I thought with a Linux PC as the scanner server  … might have a go at this myself … cheers for the link
