Fortran99 and Linux

I need to learn Fortran99 and Linux - I was wondering if the different versions of Linux might be better or worse than each other to run Fortran on.

Apologies if this is a stupid question - i am very un-experienced

I’m guessing it doesn’t really matter which Linux distro you go for as Fortran appears to be part of GCC (GNU Compiler Collection)
http://gcc.gnu.org/
which AFAIK is pretty much standard in all Linux distros.

Ubuntu for sure has the latest gcc-4.5-base (4.5.1) and gfortran-4.5 (4.5.1) packages available in the default repositories.

As for the Linux side of things… you’ll probably find Ubuntu help easier to come by.

But it must be said I’m not a programmer, so you may be better waiting for a response from someone who is.

[EDIT]
The GCC list a gfortran project objective as

Conformance to Fortran standards, primarily Fortran 95, 2003, and 2008
http://gcc.gnu.org/fortran/

So I can’t see Fortran 99 being an issue.
