I just noticed that this computer is also EXTREEEEEEMELY slow.
I opened a four or five tabs of the photoblog “thechivedotcom” and the thing just stalls and almost goes unresponsive.
I have the WLAN cable hooked up to this thing and the speedtest.net speed was very good, 164 down, yet it still loads pages like cold molasses.
The wifi speed on speedtest.net are still 0.40, very slow, but there’s more to this. This computer used to be very fast and It’s got a freshly installed OS. That used to be all I needed to make it run well…
any ideas?
So, i’ve tried installing 64 bit OSs, laptop doesn’t seem to like that, even though Puppy Linux’s command here:
grep -o -w -q 'lm' /proc/cpuinfo && echo "64 bit" || echo "32 bit"
returns an output of 64bit. So, I tried installing various other distros/flavours, mint, Ubuntu MATE, Peppermint, and currently on Lubuntu.
Yes, the WIFI is still extremely slow. I changed the channel back to 11 on the modem. No change. Ignore on Ipv6 settings, no change.
HOWEVER!!! There is still the issue of extreme sluggishness in general of the laptop, irregardless of network connectivity. Even when wired up on the LAN, opening pages is VERY slow. Getting great numbers on speedtest when wired, but it certainly doesn’t go quickly online. I have tried using Chrome, Firefox, Qupzilla. For God’s sake even when typing this there’s a lag. Youtube is choppy.
This laptop used to be very, very fast.
Oh, I also just completed your instructions for using the old driver. It doesn’t work. I no longer have Wifi after the last command.
