I have sent an email to RM asking them what their position on supplying FOSS is.
One just knows that I am due to receive a reply asking what FOSS is …
Heh … quite possibly.
Please let us know their response if you don’t mind.
Hi, that’s very interesting. It seems like these people are providing software to schools. I will try to contact them to see if they are interested in distributing GCompris.
wish devon county council had the same kind of help they said " this linux is it a project name microsoft gave to windows 8 "
Will do Mark - at the moment I’ve been sent an automated holding email. No doubt trying to Google the meaning of “FOSS” …
Well here is the answer:
"Dear Mr Morris,
Thank you for your recent enquiry.
I have checked with the Product Manager regarding your query an I can confirm that we do not a policy of supplying FOSS at the moment.
If I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me back.
Kind regards,
Sales Support Team
Business Operations"
Hardly a surprising answer but it may make them aware of the options out there.
How would the GCompris license sit with someone like RM being able to charge for it ?
I guess FOSS does not sit well in for-profit organisations,
but on other hand a company (like RM) could charge for packaging.
Now there’s an idea … tell them they can have it free, and they can charge for packaging/documentation.
Now that should appeal to their capitalistic principles. Selling free software for a living…
Heh … that’s a capitalists holy grail
Logic dictates that they should be all over this like a rash then.
Any comments from Bruno?
I wonder if the UK Cabinet Office released its Open Standards Principles (published last week)
will filter down to the Schools to level the playing field (just a litle bit more) :-
