I am trying to install GIMP. I have been looking around and found the GIMP site and followed the instructions but it comes back with please see screen shot .
I typed in apt-get install gimp into a terminal, was this right?
What do I need to do?
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?
The parts I’ve highlighted in red, are telling you that you need root permission to install the software
The parts I’ve highlighted in green (if seen when you ARE prefixing the command with “sudo”) may be telling you that another application has a lock on the “dpkg” installer.
So first make sure NON of these are running …
Synaptic package manager
Ubuntu Software center
Now … you need to have root permission to install software system wide, so precede that command with the “sudo” command … as in:
sudo apt-get install gimp
(hit enter, and your password when asked)
You might also want to install some plugins etc, such as:
sudo apt-get install gimp-data-extras gimp-gmic gimp-plugin-registry
(hit enter, and your password if/when asked)
for added functionality
Be aware - when entering your password at the command line, nothing will be echoed to screen (not even ******) but it IS being entered, so just type your password and hit enter.
