Linux Kernal upgrade?

Mint 18.2 64bit. my update manager keeps offering me a Kernal update should I install it? What are the pros and cons?

Any thoughts suggestions welcome…

What’s the output from:

uname -a

and does it mention the version of the new kernel ?

Normally Mint don’t like offering kernel updates, so if I were to GUESS, I’d say it’s probably a security update … probably a kernel with the Spectre and Meltdown patches.

userone@Office ~ $ uname -a
Linux Office 4.8.0-53-generic #56~16.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Tue May 16 01:18:56 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
userone@Office ~ $

Kernel 4. 13.0-39.44~16.04.1 Ubuntu (security.ubuntu.com)

Personally I’d accept it … the 4.8 kernel series is no longer supported and was never patched against the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities.
(4.13.0-39 has been patched)

That said, I’d also ask on the Mint forum if anyone else has had any problems.

But at the end of the day installing that kernel shouldn’t remove the old one … so theoretically you coould still boot into the 4.8 kernel if necessary

Thanks will give it a go.
