Monitor not recognised

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 2243NW monitor that is working OK but because the operating system lists it as unknown I can not get the highest refresh rate from the system.

I have tried both drivers that are listed in alliterative drivers.

Any clues or am I stuck with a max 52Hz refresh rate.

OK, with the monitor attached, you’re going to want to generate a new /etc/X11/xorg.conf file… see instructions here:

http://linuxforums.org.uk/general-help-advice/xorg-conf/msg49091/#msg49091

Once generated and moved to the right place… reboot and see if your monitor is recognised properly, and/or offers you more refresh rates and resolutions.

REMEMBER - Write the instructions down as you will be working (partly) from a console… and if you have any problems, either copying the backup back, or deleting the /etc/X11/xorg.conf (not the backup) should get you going again.
