Over riding an XP password?

Next group

Still in the same terminal run:

sudo b43-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware wl_apsta-3.130.20.0.o

then

sudo chmod 755 /lib/firmware/b43

then

sudo chmod 755 /lib/firmware/b43legacy

For clarity -

sudo b43-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware wl_apsta-3.130.20.0.o
then
sudo chmod 755 /lib/firmware/b43
then
sudo chmod 755 /lib/firmware/b43legacy

tell me when done, or if there is an error.

Can’t get the sudo- says cannot open input file
I am typing:

sudo b43-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware wl_apsta-3.130.20.0.o

OK, let’s skip that one for now … it may not even be required.

What happens if you run:
sudo chmod 755 /lib/firmware/b43

It entered and goes to my laptop’s name and has the words /Desktop/b43offline in blue like it wants another command.

OK, what happens if you run:
sudo modprobe b43

Same again enters my laptop’s name comes up and wants a command

OK, see the clock bottom right of screen … somewhere to the left of that will be the NetworkManager icon … probably looks like 2 unplugged cables.

Click it

is your wireless network listed ?

Yes but says no network connection

Click the NetworkManager icon

Click your network name in the popup list.

What happens ?

I click on my internet provider and then a box comes up and says sxystem policy prevents modification of network settings for all users and then asks for authentication, which is my password but says it’s unsuccessful- same password I use to get on netbook.

Ahhh it wanted my Linux password…LIFT OFF!!! I think…the circle is going and some lights on the laptop are on…

You’re getting ahead of me again … I didn’t tell you to rnter a password, I just asked what happened

click networkmanager icon

click your network name

in the box that mentions “sxystem policy” … enter your PEPPERMINT password … NOT your wireless key … and click “Authenticate”

Now what appears … and DO NOT get ahead of me.

OK too late

Has the circle changed to some steps ?

Thought that’s what you mean, anyhow just as I said Mark, now it wants the wireless network encryption key or password

OK NOW enter your wireless key, and hit connect

Did the NetworkManager icon change to some steps ?

ONLINE!

One last thing

REBOOT

and test wireless come on automatically

To reboot, click the “menu” button (bottom left of screen) and select “Logout”, then select “Reboot”

Yep, it’s on- the computer takes more time to come on when rebooting/logging in than this netbook but maybe that’s due to the RAM.Once it’s on it’s quick tho!

Hasn’t got the task bar that Firefox has : file edit view history bookmarks tools help tho

OK, have a play and come back tomorrow and we’ll install any software you want … please don’t install any yourself yet as we need to do some updates and check all the hardware is working properly

What time you free tomorrow ?

BTW, you can delete the b43offline directory from the desktop now if you wish.

To open your Home folder … click

menu>File Manager

That automatically opens in your home folder

Just have a look around and I’ll answer any questions tomorrow

Wouldn’t hurt to have an idea of what software you’re going to want too

The boot time of the netbook is because it has an SSD … that will slow too when it has a HDD … that’s just the way it is, SSD’s are MUCH faster, but MUCH more expensive per gigabyte . which is why they tend to be smaller

Yeh the amount of RAM may play a small role, but by far the biggest reason the netbook boots so fast is the SSD

I’m not lying when I say Peppermint is quicker than Mint … on the same hardware

We’ll install Firefox too tomorrow if you want

[EDIT]

Flash probably won’t work either untill we do some stuff tomorrow … but anything you find that doesn’t work, DON’T PANIC, it will tomorrow
