peppermint 3 on a Desktop with vista [solved]

Hi Emegra, Installed by CD downloaded from peppermintos

Eddie I’m not the man to ask those questions I’m probably the most clueless on here

but as far as your questions are concerned

Question:- Have I got a virus.?

Highly unlikely, viruses are almost non existent in Linux

May be a step by step approach is better,

Possibly but either Mark or SeZo would be better to do that with you

I,ve gone through 20 fags already

Do what I did go digital, it doesn’t help with PC problems but it’s a hell of a lot cheaper

This might sound silly but i assume you have removed the installation CD from the PC ?

I may be wrong but this command prompt suggests to me you’re running a live session

peppermint@peppermint ~ $ cat /etc/apt/sources.list; for X in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*; do echo; echo; echo "** $X:"; echo; cat $X; done
# /etc/apt/sources.list
I may be wrong but this command prompt suggests to me you're running a live session
Emegra might be on the right track.

If you need simple guidance for installing Peppermint OS then this guide would do that for you.
http://peppermintos.com/guide/install/
More setup guides here

Also a clearer description/answers would go a long way in enabling others to help you

I’m with Emegra too

It looks like you’re booting a Live session … such as booting a LiveCD or a LiveUSB

Are you SURE the Peppermint CD isn’t still in the drive ?

What’s the output from:

ls -a ~/Desktop

and

mount

[EDIT]

And NO, you haven’t got a virus … depending on your definition of ā€œvirusā€, there are NO true viruses for Linux in the wild (and no incentive to write any, because they wouldn’t get very far), and the handful of ā€œproof of conceptā€ viruses that have existed have been patched against long ago … this is not to say malicious code cannot be written for Linux, it can, but you’d specifically have to download it from somewhere outside the default repositories, then manually mark it executable, then manually install it entering your password as part of the install … you haven’t got a virus

OK Guy,s, Mark,Sezo,Emegra.
Somehow and I don’t know how, but I,d downloaded the ISO of peppermint Three (3) From Peppermintos with unetBootin installed onto the same DVD Disk.My External DVD Drive then sent this onto my Active/Boot drive,Windows Vista NTFS. (originally this hard drive was 1.8GB.) Then next to it was an un allocated space of approx 38.8GB. This I,d hoped peppermint 3 would reside. I also have bitdefender on windows and you cannot close it down without un installing it.That said everything was or seemed to be fine, until I then ran into problems with the Peppermint 3 Full install. Again it seemed fine apart from when I was replying to Marks, sorry one of Mark,s questions online,I,d realized the " key and the @ key were not where they normally show on an English qwerty keyboard. Twice mark gave step by step instructions to try and rectify the problem, which it did(Sezo I hope this answers your remark). Well ive now got nothing no distro. I have Minitool professional partitioning Wizard, This I used to shrink my C: Drive to 951.2GB NTFS(out of 1.8GB NTFS-approx) then created two new partitions (along side that)lets call it number two partition , E:599.47 GB (FAT32) finally 3rd partition for Linux/peppermint 3 is 312.34GB (EXT 2) so I don,t know exactly how I,ll get on. The computer is a self build Pentium 4, ( 4 GB RAM) With Ge Force7300 gt graphics card 32bit system Motherboard 865PE north bridge ICHS South bridge. Well I know Is ancient but it works just, and fairly fast. Thing now is can you help get the OS 3 installed. I,d rather download, configure the os as I want to learn. My ex lecturer was Phil Irving (UNIX) but that,s another story for another day. He wrote the bible on (UNIX) taught in the north east of England but published the PC Support Handbook with co writer David Dick through Dumbreck Publishing.

Please can someone help ā€œSure you can teach an old dog new tricksā€ :P.

Before we go any further … I’m confused … how did you burn the ISO image to a DVD with Unetbootin ?

Unetbootin is for creating LiveUSB sticks, not LiveCD/LiveDVD’s

Here’s your first steps.

  1. Explain how you created your LiveDVD

  2. Use Windows to delete the EXT2 partition leaving UNPARTITIONED space instead … this will make installation easier.

Hi mark,
apparently my misses said she put the USB back into the rear of my computer upstairs, when I,d Left it in the Kitchen. This USB was the one I,d loaded onto her AOA150 which works fine. Sorry I stand corrected and feel such a fool. :-[

So is it working … or do you need to reinstall Peppermint ?

Can I also ask why you formatted the 600GB partition as FAT32 instead of NTFS ? … you do realise FAT32 has a maximum single file size limit of 4GB which can be a problem for large files like video, and is a non-journalling file system ?

[EDIT]

Back in 15 … walking the dog

Mark " looking on the Gparted web site. there is a full page on , ā€œDuel bootingā€ so all I did was try out what was advised for a duel boot

Eddie … you seem to have a habit of ignoring my questions.

Do you still need to reinstall Peppermint … or is it working now ?

If you need to reinstall, have you deleted the EXT2 partition ?

And as a matter of interest, why did you choose FAT32 instead of NTFS for the 600GB partition … and do you understand FAT32’s limitations ?

yes i need to re-install peppermint OS 3.,
,Also Fat32, again was suggested for files from Windows so that these could be placed there in that central position partition so as Linux could access as well as windows. It was suggested it would speed up booting cashing etc etc. just thought it would help in some way.
What Dog you got?

Personally I’d have gone for NTFS on the 600GB partition … FAT32 sucks, and Linux can easily read/write to NTFS.

I repeat … Have you deleted the EXT2 partition leaving UNPARTITIONED space for Peppermint ?

no mark grand kids are in bed, cant get into room as its got my PC in there. They come once a fortnight.
Will change them back if you say it,s better. at moment I,m using my wife,s AOA 150 To reply.

OK, when you get the chance …

a) If you want, change the FAT32 partition to NTFS ← this is up to you, and is not necessary if you don’t want to

b) DELETE the EXT2 partition altogether, leaving unpartitioned space (however much you want to assign to Peppermint) … this way the Peppermint installer will offer to install to the ā€œFree Spaceā€ and set up its own partition.

Once you’ve done that … let me know, and I’ll post what to do next.

Thanks Mark, be online tomorrow.

OK Mark,
All completed,-- Drive C:NTFS 951.2GB,—Drive E:NTFS 599.47GB, ----last space un allocated@ 312.34GB.

OK, boot to your Peppermint LiveUSB stick

When asked, select ā€œTry Peppermintā€ not ā€œInstall Peppermintā€

When you get to the desktop … Click the Install Peppermint icon on the desktop, and follow the onscreen prompts to install Peppermint

If you have your PC connected to your router by an ethernet cable (or have enabled wireless from the Live desktop), when asked by the installer, put ticks in the boxes to

Install extra software
and
Install updates during installation

Otherwise leave them unticked.

When you get to the Allocate drive space part of the installer, tell it to use the free space alongside windows…

When you get to the part where it ask you for a username and password etc … here’s a few hints -

You will be asked for things like -

Name:
Computername:
Username:
Password:
Re-Enter Password:

The Computername field will probably be autofilled for you after you’ve entered your name … but you can change it.

Make sure the Username is all lower case, and no spaces

Here’s what I used for MY AA1

Name: Mark Greaves Computername: mark-AA1 Username: mark Password: whatever_you_want Re-Enter Password: whatever_you_want (again)

so keep the username short and lower case (and no spaces)

Password rules … I think it needs to be at least 6 digits and at least one number … and remember, passwords ARE case sensitive.

It may be a good idea to write down what you enter here, so you don’t forget them … you WILL need at least the Username and Password later on, so don’t forget them.

When asked if you want to enable ā€œAuto Loginā€ (Login Automatically) … tick that option if you DON’T want to have to enter your username and password at each boot.

Thanks Mark, trying it now.

Hi Mark,
Looks OK and Thanks.Ready to carry on.
