Peppermint 3

Mark, I will be ready about 2 pm- just have to wash my hair and have some brunch. Got up quite late- had terminal commands going round in my dreams LOL- bit tired so got up rather late.

P.S- the Star Trek HD works on the laptop on m player! Even the Enterprise ones which smudge on this netbook.

See ya later.

Okey dokey

Just have to wash my plate and will be there in a mo…

Hello, got laptop on.

Enabling the extra software repositories

In the menu, go to System Tools > Synaptic Package Manager, enter your password, when Synaptic starts -

Go to Settings > Repositories … when a new window opens -

On the “Peppermint Software” tab, make sure ALL 4 boxes are ticked.

On the “Other Software” tab, make sure all boxes are ticked EXCEPT the cdrom:[Peppermint 3_Three_ - Release i386 (some-date-or-other)]/ precise

Click Close

Click the Reload button on the Synaptic toolbar.

Close Synaptic.

(It’s IMPORTANT that you close Synaptic, or the commands in the next stage won’t run)

Tell me when you’re done, or if you have any problems.

Yes, all done thanks. Sorry took so long, had to create a new PW for this forum as forgot what it was- needed to log in on the laptop as well as the netbook.

OK … make SURE Synaptic is closed, then open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run the following commands

Best to copy/paste commands into the terminal from now on:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get upgrade

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Tell me when you’ve run those 3 commands … or any errors

Ok, think this is ok so far except asking about the disk space:

78 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 5 not upgraded.
Need to get 175 MB of archives.
After this operation, 43.2 MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]?

hit y (and then enter)

thats not large

Tell me when done

It is running along…will let you know when it’s done.

Well it was…until the battery suddenly died!!! And must be a Firefox thing because when the netbook battery dies without me seeing it and I plug it in all the pages I had up are still there. Also the netbook has a warning box to tell me to plug in the charger but this one doesn’t.

Got this in the terminal:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run ‘sudo dpkg --configure -a’ to correct the problem.

Make sure you’re connected by power lead for now and run:

sudo dpkg --configure -a

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get upgrade

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Tell me when done, or any errors

It is happily unpacking Mark! Phew will have to get this laptop a cooling mat- it is getting rather warm…

EDIT-it’s done.

OK, as it will have installed a newer kernel, REBOOT (to load the new kernel).

Once rebooted, tell me what software you want on top of this lot

eg. do you want

GIMP (Linux Photoshop alternative)

or anything else ?

Rebooted. Yes, I’d like the above- wondering if Ubuntu office is still supported though? I liked that better then Libre Office.
Also would like:

Sound Recorder
Tux Penguin game

Regarding GIMP- I find it confusing to use, but then never use Photoshop either! If you know of something easier please let me know.

I presume all these I get from the package manager? I was using that right away even before I went to LUG. I was curious about my new netbook and thought hello what’s this and it was a bit of an OMG moment when I saw a plethora of amazing packages!

Open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run:

sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer

at some point the terminal will turn blue telling you you need to accept a license, with at the bottom …
hit the Tab key so the is highlighted red … hit the Enter key …
the next screen will have , again hit the Tab key so/until is highlighted red … and hit the Enter key.

Tell me when that’s finished.

Ok it is unpacking or loading .

EDIT- It wants it’s next command- getting the hang of this sudo thing now Mark- was even reading about it on Wiki having my brunch today.

back in 5 … nicotine.

let me know when done.

The gas has just ran out- will just pop over road and credit that greedy card. BRB.
