Problem solved (via PM) … password now set in the vino VNC server that was running.

I was told that Linux does not need a firewall. I notice there are firewalls for Ubuntu download. Would it be safer to install one, if so which one ?

You might find that they meant “Linux doesn’t need an anti-virus program”, or possibly “your” [Linux] computer doesn’t need a firewall.

If your machine is on the end of an ADSL line, behind a NAT router - then you don’t really need a firewall, because the router is effectively a firewall. Unless of course you don’t trust the router … I guess it depends on how paranoid you are / what you keep on your PC (!)
