Ubuntu printer-scanner problems hp1050A AIO

the new printer I have won’t setup but if I go to terminal it says cups is not installed I’m on ubuntu 11.10 please help would I use the sane program for the scanner dose it make a difference if its all in one?

I’d be seriously surprised if CUPS wasn’t installed.

Install the hplip-gui package:

sudo apt-get install hplip-gui

You should then find the HPLIP Toolbox in the menu’s somewhere … Set your printer up in there.

SANE is a command line application, and the backend for scanning applications like Simple Scan and Xsane.

I’d suggest Xsane:

sudo apt-get install xsane

OK …

What is the output from

dpkg -l hplip

What happens if you (in your web browser) go to:
http://localhost:631/
then select … Administration > Find New Printers

I’m doing this from memory … but what happens if you click the blue writing (HP-Deskjet-1050-J410-series) on the screen in your pic … does it let you add the printer ?

if not, go back to Administration > Add Printer

If it asks for a username/password … it’s your Linux ones it wants.

Dunno … try it and see … you can always remove it if it doesn’t in Administration > Manage Printers

According to the HPLIP website, the drivers for your printer have been included since hplip-3.10.6

You are on a more recent version … so they’re on there somewhere.

Did you try Administration > Add Printer ?

Have you tried adding it through the system settings panel … Ubuntu >= 11.04 is supposed to be able to automatically detect and offer you the correct driver ?

It may be listed as J410

I take it the printer is working now ? … but not the scanner ?

What is the output from:

sane-find-scanner

and

sudo sane-find-scanner

and

scanimage -L

This is a USB printer, and not a wireless one ?

You could also try installing the latest version of hplip (3.12.4) … instructions and download here:
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html

Will you STOP opening multiple topics, when ALL of this should be being covered in your original topic:
http://linuxforums.org.uk/index.php?topic=10094.0

I’m now going to merge those 3 topics.

[EDIT]

Merged, and PM sent to OP

OK, lets start from scratch, remove all the printers, and install the latest hplip …

In your web browser, go to
http://localhost:631/
then go to Administration tab > Manage Printers

click the BLUE writing at the beginning of the line for the HP 1050 J410

Select the “Administration” drop menu … Select “Delete Printer”

Do this for ALL entries other than PDF if present.

Open a terminal and run:

sudo sytem-config-printer

If there are any printers in there (other than PDF) … right-click them, and select “Delete”.

Close the printing window.

Back in the terminal, run:

sudo apt-get remove hplip-gui

then

cd ~

then

wget http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/hplip/hplip-3.12.4.run

then

sh hplip-3.12.4.run

then follow the instructions from Step3 on this page:
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html

“a” was probably fine … but did it guess your Ubuntu version correctly ?

did it find your printer ?

If you open a terminal and run:

hp-setup

then go to the linked page above, and continue from step 11 … does it find your printer ?

What is in the “PPD File:” field ?

Are you saying that you couldn’t enter the CUPS web interface ? … Click this link in your browser:
http://localhost:631/

does that take you to the CUPS web interface ? … what’s listed if you select Administration tab > Manage Printers

If there’s 4 of them, you need to delete them all, then when there’s NONE, run:

hp-setup

again and add just ONE copy.

I’m not understanding you, and you’re not answering my questions again :o

What happens if you click this link:
http://localhost:631/
??

The CUPS username and password are you Linux ones

Can’t you delete them from within

hp-setup

or from within:

system-config-printer

Are you saying your Linux password no longer works ? … how are you logging on ?

You’ve lost me with the shortcuts, and cut and paste comments … and CUPS should accept your Linux username and password … have you tried creating a new user, making that user an administrator, then logging into that account and seeing if everything works.

If not, and your system is that messed up that it won’t accept passwords … maybe you should consider a fresh install … specially considering 12.04 was just released.

IIRC, your PC has played up since you upgraded 10.10 → 11.10

Your printer and scanner are supposed to just work.

You’ve lost me … You have the 12.04 LiveCD ISO image downloaded ? … if so, why are you trying to extract it ?

You need to burn the ISO image to a CD or DVD with something like Brasero … or use “Startup Disk Creator” to create a LiveUSB stick with it.

There are links on how to burn the CD in Ubuntu or Windows on the right hand column of this page:
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

Then boot to it.

I have no idea what “tails live image” is ???

How did you burn the ISO image to DVD ?

Yes, set the CD/DVD drive as the first boot device in the BIOS.

Or when your system is showing the POST screen … look for a message telling you what key to press to enter the boot device selection screen … usually F12 or F10

It won’t load the HP icon on to the top bar I also looked in applications for it but no luck

it takes me to cups if I click on the local link
It won’t let me passed the password to add printer, I think this is an error on my part can I delete account and restart(sorry)

found USB scanner (vendor=0x03f0 [HP], product=0x8911 [Deskjet 1050 J410 series]) at libusb:002:002 but when I select scan I get the error fail to start scan …device I/O

gordon@gordon-desktop:~$ scanimage -L
device `hpaio:/usb/Deskjet_1050_J410_series?serial=CN19D1N19C05QT’ is a Hewlett-Packard Deskjet_1050_J410_series all-in-one
gordon@gordon-desktop:~$

I be back tomorrow should be about 6 pm
thanks for ur help so far

What’s the output from:

hp-check -t

?

I’ve attached the output it tells me theres no tray for exiting

OK first of all you have 3 print queues for that printer … click this link:
http://localhost:631
Then click Administration>Manage Printers … click the blue writing for each HP printer (in turn) and select “Delete Printer” from the Administration drop menu.

Make sure you’ve deleted ALL HP printer queues … we’ll add one back later, after sorting the other problems.

Secondly … you appear to have some missing run-time dependencies (for hplip) … With your printer turned ON, open a terminal and run:

hp-check -r

and post the output.

Here’s mine for comparison (Ubuntu 11.10 64bit):-

the printer is switched on with the USB connected ?

OK, first open a terminal and run:

users-admin

In the window that opens, click “Manage Groups”

In the new window, scroll down to “lp”, click it (to highlight it) and click “Properties”

In the new window, put a tick in the little box by your username, and click “OK” … enter your password when asked, then close all windows.

Now REBOOT … once rebooted, run:

groups

and check you are now in the “lp” group.

Now in your Web Browser, go to:
http://localhost:631
and delete ALL HP printer queues … when it asks for a username/password, they are your Ubuntu username and password you need to enter.

When you’ve deleted ALL HP printer queues … open a terminal and run:

hp-toolbox

If the HP Toolbox opens, set up your priter in there.
