systemd-analyze critical-chain > ~/Desktop/critical-chain.txt

and

systemd-analyze blame > ~/Desktop/blame.txt

you’ll then find 2 text files on yourdesktop called “critical-chain.txt” and “blame.txt” … can you host those online (see link above) then post links to them.

CAn you also post the output from:

sudo blkid

and the contents of

xed /etc/fstab

systemd also has ways of graphically representing the boot process such as “systemd-analyze plot > ~/Desktop/plot.svg”, or you can enable bootchart2 … but these are probably not necessary at the moment … but in case you are interested they are covered here:

Okay, first let’s uninstall btrfs-tools, you’re not using btrfs so there’s no point keeping it … open a terminal and run:

sudo apt-get remove btrfs-tools

Now onto a bigger issue, it looks like the UUID of your swap partition is wrong in fstab … back in the terminal run:

sudo xed /etc/fstab

and change the bottom 2 lines from:-

# swap was on /dev/sda3 during installation
UUID=2245b98f-e623-4190-aced-cde914193e48 none            swap    sw              0       0

to:-

# swap on /dev/sda5
UUID=6e841fc8-6e03-478d-bf79-d5ae9823f7e8 none            swap    sw              0       0

SAVE the file and exit xed

Back in the terminal run:

sudo swapon -a

Now REBOOT ← IMPORTANT

Once rebooted, run:

free -m

and post the output back here so we can check swap is actually working.

Also let us know if the boot speed improved or not.

that solutions caused lot of issues so i had to reinstall the system :frowning:

I had slow boot and shutdown on mint serena cinnammon 18 ,after deleting a windows7 partition (i dual booted with mint) and resizing my linux home and root partitions.I messed something up and swap partition was showing as unallocated so i recreated the swap partition.I followed the advice you gave to the original poster and have fixed my boot time from 0ver 3mins to 48 secs.My swap UUID was different as shown.I followed you instructions to the letter and every things fine so just want to thank you.Heres my before and after results

I wonder whether you could advise ,on whether to alter my current partition configuration?.I currently have a 344gig /root partition ,which Im told may cause slowdowns further on down the line ,and have been advised that 30 gigs may be better to use with the extra space added to my home partition.If this is advisable ,whats the best way to resize with gparted.?I have tried and basically made a mess but had the sense to image my pc before trying so ive just restored the image back.I could easily shrink the /root partition but could not work out how to extend home to use the unallocated space as it was to the left of the partition.To be honest my system is very snappy with no slowdowns as it is so I wonder whether I should just leave it as is anyway?.Ive uploaded a pic of gparted and my partitions.Im using linux mint serena 18.1 on dell core2duo dektop with 4 gig of ram.

Well first of all I obviously don’t know who told you a large root partition would slow your system over time, but whilst technically he’s ‘not wrong’ he’s also not fully ‘right’, Linux file systems tend to leave lots of room between files (which is why they don’t need defragging) so the drive read/write heads would have further to travel for seeks on a larger partition, but in the real world seek times of modern HDD’s are that quick you’d likely never notice as a human.

In fact having space for the filesystem to leave room between files is more likely to keep your system quick (specially if you started to fill up a smaller root partition).

I can explain what to do if you want, but seriously my mate I’d just leave as is :wink:

Trust me, Linux file systems don’t noticeably slow over time like Windows ones do unless you run low on space.

Ever wondered why most distros default to a single / partition (without even a separate /home) ? … heck they’re even ditching separate swap partitions now and moving to a swap FILE :wink:
