Web cam on Linux

My old laptop is gonna get fixed up (new HD, more RAM, reloaded distro etc) and I would like to use it for Skype. It doesn’t have a built in web cam so I would need to get one. What models work in Linux?

almost any webcam will work in Linux, however as much as I dislike the company the Microsoft LifeCam works very well and it has a built in microphone.

Thanks Graeme- would I have to install a driver to recognise the web cam?

No Melissa that particular cam worked straight out of the box with Peppermint 6 so I imagine it would run fine in any Ubuntu based distro

I’ve also used various other cams in the past and can’t recall having problems with any of them or having to install any 3rd party drivers to get them to work but I did have problems getting them to work with Skype, that said they were oldish

but I can vouch for the Microsoft LifeCam it worked with Skype straight out of the box

Good luck

Thanks Graeme- it would be for Skype.
