Best Linux distro for ancient Acer TravelMate 2200 - browser only required ?

Thanks - tried this but I really would prefer a different browser, preferably Chrome or Chromium, rather than Firefox. Also the screen fonts didn’t look great and there didn’t seem to be any option to change the settings?

Managed to get Unetbootin to work with the slitaz-4.0-firefox.iso (Index of /iso/4.0/flavors/) and then installed from the panel using the web option to grab the full slitaz-4.0.iso.

Trouble is I also installed GRUB and now I can’t boot into Peppermint … it doesn’t appear as an option on the GRUB screen. I’m sure there must be an easy way to sort that out?

Oh, you will haveto be careful in the future to not let the distros you trying out to install grub (at least not to /dev/sda) Boot into a Live Session (CD or USB) then: When at the desktop run these commands in sequence: sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt then:
for i in /dev /dev/pts /proc /sys /run; do sudo mount -B $i /mnt$i; done

then:

sudo chroot /mnt

then:

grub-install --recheck /dev/sda

then:

update-grub

Then hit Ctrl+D to exit the chroot environment
Reboot

Brilliant - thanks SeZo!

Well … my experience with SliTaz was not too good. There seemed to be a problem with the screen resolution which wouldn’t go higher than 800x600 and I need 1024x768. Seems a lot of other other people have had this problem as well? Anyway I ditched it after trying several suggestions posted in various places and installed CrunchBang.

So I now have Peppermint 4 and CrunchBang Waldorf dual booting. Both work very well although Peppermint seems to be a contender for the cigar.

Peppermint is a tad faster but takes longer to boot up. Crunchbang I like as well … boots up fast though not so quick with the installed Chrome browser …

I just love this freedom … why and how was I conned into thinking that there wasn’t ever going to be an alternative to Micro$oft? The blinkers are off …

Sorry to hear Slitaz didn’t work out for you but that’s the beauty of Linux there’s plenty others to choose from, I’m sure Peppermint would be a good choice I have it running on an old Dell laptop and it flies

Anyway good luck with whatever you choose

Hi Graeme … thanks for your encouragement …

I haven’t completely given up on SliTaz … just looked fuzzy so …

I’m still open to suggestions …

Right now Peppermint is working well … I may stick with that … then again … I like the look of CrunchBang … also SliTaz … although the latter won’t work for me right now.

How do I work around that 1024x768 business with SliTaz? Is there a way of working around that?

I’m not sure what to suggest regarding the Slitaz display problem but I’m downloading it now and I’ll burn it to a USB and have a look and see what it does on my PC and I’ll get back to you

Graeme

Thanks Graeme … please don’t go to to too much trouble.

You are all very kind.
