I’ve just installed Peppermint 5 to my daughters PC which I have connected to my network, I’ve been having video streaming problems and I think the problem might be due to extremely slow download speed compared to other PC’s connected to the network, there are 4 PC’s currently connected and the download speed ranges between 12mbps & 26mbps however the PC in question is only reporting 0.48mbps which seems unnaturally slow
What does networkmanager say is the wireless connection speed ?
On average about 60mbps at the same time the other PC’s record about 108 mbps
Does it take longer to transfer a large file from your NAS on this PC than others ?
Yes much longer I tested it with a 14mb music video it took 1min 20 secs to copy from the NAS to the Home folder while the other 2 PC’s took only 3 secs to do the same thing
Okey dokey, one further thing I’d like you to do befre sending all the connection info
Make sure all PC’s are OFF … reboot the router … fire up this PC and test if wireless has improved (you can ignore your NAS, just have as many PC’s as possible OFF when testing this one).
Ok I did as you suggested, copying the same music video took only 30 sec this time (still 10 times slower than the other PC’s) connection speed is the same and playing a youtube video is no better,
One thing that was strange although it might not mean anything is before I did anything I tried to connect to the router interface to make sure I could reboot from the PC when ready and it wouldn’t connect nor would it connect with the other PC’s so I had to reboot the router manually, now that it’s been rebooted it’s connecting no problem.
Ok I can’t carry out the instructions because it’s dropping connection constantly and the only way I can reconnect is to reboot and to add to that anytime the network drops out the PC refuses to shut down, it get to the screen Peppermint, Shutting Down , the red progress bar get to about a quarter of the way across and stops and I have to hit the power button, this is not a new problem I have been experiencing this as well as the slow connection but it wasn’t as frequent as it is now.
However I’ve come across another USB adaptor and that seems to be working better, the connection speed seems to be about the same but I copied the music video over in 7 seconds which is much more in line with the other PC’s, youtube videos is better and almost watchable
and now after typing all that I’ve just noticed the network has dropped out again but it popped in again after a few minutes
Just checked internet download speed and it seems a little better at 2.64mbps but it’s lower than the upload at 3.07mbps
Okey dokey, are you sure this isn’t just a location issue … is the download speed still rubbish if you move elsewhere ?
With a USB adapter post the output from:
lsusb
and
sudo lshw -C network
and
ifconfig
and
iwconfig
and
iwlist scanning
and
rfkill list
that covers pretty much everything I should need to know … and really should be posted with any enquiry about wireless (note to self, might be a good idea to post this as a sticky)

Try temporarily disabling wireless encryption in the router and seeing if that improves anything.
Ok I’ll give that a try and post back
You didn't answer my question whether this could purely be "location" based .. does another laptop give much better results from the same room ?
Sorry Mark I’ve been distracted today with one thing or another this is not a laptop it’s a desktop PC so I’m limited as to where I can locate it but it’s currently located no more than 3 feet from my PC which has no issues, the router is in the attic and positioned no more than 10 feet away directly above
is that other PC wireless ? .. what happens if you try it's wireless adapter ?
The other PC is wireless but it’s PCI, and unfortunately I don’t have a spare PCI slot on Laura’s PC (my daughter) it’s taken up with a ethernet card but I’ve just thought I do have a USB ethernet adaptor so I can use that and try a PCI wireless card in it’s place
I thought you were gonna ask that, I’ll try to explain what I’m trying to do
This PC was running Peppermint 4 so it needed to be upgraded anyway but my daughter asked me if it was possible put all Chloes movies, music videos etc on it and set up a softmodded xbox running XBMC in her bedroom to stream the videos to her TV so the idea is to use the PC as a normal computer and a media server so I need wireless to connect to the internet and ethernet to connect the xbox to the PC
Hope I’ve explained that ok
So far I’m not having much luck, the PC is running fine and although the internet connection could be better it may be as good as I’m gonna get and it’s probably adequate for normal browsing, the main issues I’m having as well as the network problem is getting the xbox to connect to the PC via SMB but that’s a completely different issue so I’ll post a new thread if I get completely stuck

# You can modify it, as long as you keep each rule on a single

SAVE the file and shut down.
Now try the network adapter from the other PC in the room in this one … and see if it has the same kinda connection speed as the one you just removed it from.
That way we can say whether it’s purely the adapter or not.
You can always replace the network adapter afterwards.
ok I tried what you suggested and installed the card from my PC but it’s not showing any available networks, it is being detected in the PC

Before I done this I tried a PCI wireless card I had lying around to save me taking the one out of my PC and although it connected to the network it made no difference so I then followed you instructions again and installed the one from my PC
Ok I got the card working by deleting all the connections in the network manager and rebooting and the difference in the download speed is amazing
before the best I could get was about 2.2mbps but normally less than 1mbps but after installing the card from my PC it recorded 49mbps which is faster than any of the other PC’s have recorded
I’m just gonna leave things as they are I’ll leave the spare PCI card in my PC for now it’s recording a slower download speed but not as low as it was recording in Laura’s PC but I can get a better card at a later date
