E122 Dongle please help

:slight_smile: Ok I think we’re doing progress here… but not quite there.

It’s looping into this:

I hope that’s good. :o

Can you make a note of the time, then try that wvdial again, then immediately go to System>Administration>Log File Viewer… in the left hand panel select syslog and look for anything with a time stamp around when you tried wvdial, tha looks similar to this:

Nov 25 18:45:18 DB pppd[6329]: Modem hangup

and send me the preceeding lines that start with:

Nov 25 18:45:18 DB pppd (or similar)

obviously the time stamp will be different, but it’s the DB pppd part that matters, so send the previous lines that contain DB pppd.

here’s the kind of thing I’m after -

Oct 13 09:27:54 DB pppd[6329]: Lost compression sync: disabling compression
Oct 13 09:27:54 DB pppd[6329]: sent [CCP TermReq id=0x2"Lost compression sync"]
Oct 13 09:27:54 DB pppd[6329]: rcvd [Compressed data] 00 15 c4 56 5d 4f c2 30 …
Oct 13 09:27:55 DB pppd[6329]: rcvd [CCP TermAck id=0x2]
Oct 13 09:27:56 DB pppd[6329]: Modem hangup

Or anything else contained in the syslog that you think might be relevant.

This is all I get in syslog, and it just loops there.

Nov 25 19:23:31 danicast-laptop pppd[26749]: pppd 2.4.5 started by root, uid 0
Nov 25 19:23:31 danicast-laptop pppd[26749]: Using interface ppp0

Nov 25 19:23:31 danicast-laptop pppd[26749]: Connection terminated.

With the dongle plugged in…

Can you run this:

sudo wvdialconf  /etc/wvdial.conf

and post the output.

Also AFTER running that, post the contents of /etc/wvdail.conf

Also send the output from:

ls -la /dev/ttyU*

~$ sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf

Editing `/etc/wvdial.conf'.

Have you tested that wvdial.conf ?

sudo wvdial

and let me know if it works… if not send the output… if it DOES work, slowly turn up the Baud rate because 9600 is going to be VERY slow.

Baud rates to try -

Baud = 38400
Baud = 57600
Baud = 115200
Baud = 230400

It just loops trying to do something but never connects. :cry:

Let me know if you need anything else. Thanks so much for your help!

Try this for me…

sudo gedit /etc/ppp/options

now add a new line:

[b]nodeflate[/b]

just above the:
# ——
line… save the file, and try running:

sudo wvdial

something else to try…

Change the:
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
line in wvdial.conf to
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB2

and see if that works… if it doesn’t, don’t forget to remove the “nodeflate” line you added to /etc/ppp/options

Still no joy. :frowning:

Adding the nodeflate line didn’t have any effect, still loops trying to connect. Then changed ttyUSB0 to ttyUSB2 and got this:

~$ sudo wvdial

[EDIT]
See the post below first
{END EDIT]

Try this…

Install usb-modeswitch with:

sudo apt-get install usb-modeswitch

then try this wvdial.conf

Dialer Defaults] Phone = *99# Username = 3ireland Password = 3ireland Stupid Mode = 1 Dial Command = ATDT

[Dialer three]
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
Baud = 460800
Init2 = ATZ
Init3 = ATE0 V1 &D2 &C1 S0=0 +IFC=2,2
ISDN = 0
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Init5 = AT+CGDCONT=1,“IP”,“3ireland.ie”

Try with:

sudo wvdial three

and let me know the output.

You haven’t got a PIN check on the SIM have you ?

you could also try changing the Init3 line to:
Init3 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2

Just as a matter of interest, why aren’t you using NetworkManager ? … I’m beginning to wonder if it would be easier to fix whatever was wrong there instead :wink:

usb-modeswitch has been installed all along because I installed it to make it work with NM. See [ubuntu] Huawei E122 Mobile Broadband HSPA USB Stick.

So the output it’s probably the same:
~$ sudo wvdial three

--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Cannot get information for serial port.
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ

--> Sending: ATE0 V1 &D2 &C1 S0=0 +IFC=2,2
ATE0 V1 &D2 &C1 S0=0 +IFC=2,2
COMMAND NOT SUPPORT
--> Sending: ATQ0
OK
--> Re-Sending: ATE0 V1 &D2 &C1 S0=0 +IFC=2,2
COMMAND NOT SUPPORT
--> Modem not responding.

I’m forced to stop using NM at work because of this bug Bug #548992 “Wireless connection frequently drops [deauthentica...” : Bugs : Debian
And I’ve asked for help here:
Question #132614 “Wireless reconnections (CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTE...” : Questions : gnome-nettool package : Ubuntu
[ubuntu] Thinkpad W500 wireless connection keeps dropping

I tried all sorts of suggestions on that launchpad bug report but nothing worked. The only thing that fixed it was uninstalling NM and installing WICD. Unfortunately because I do like NM a lot.

Dialer Defaults] Phone = *99# Username = 3ireland Password = 3ireland Stupid Mode = 1 Dial Command = ATDT

[Dialer three]
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0

Init2 = ATZ
Init3 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2
ISDN = 0
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Init5 = AT+CGDCONT=1,“IP”,“3ireland.ie”

try that with:

wvdial three

ie. NO sudo

Output now:

I think I need a Guinness now…

try leaving the password and username lines empty…

Password =

not even any " "

So I presume NM does send three/three under the hood…

try leaving the password and username lines empty but with “”…

Password = “”
Username = “”

and change init3 line to

Init3 = AT+CGDCONT=1,“IP”,“3ireland.ie”,“”,0,0

and remove the ; from these lines

Nameserver = 172.31.140.69
Nameserver2 = 172.30.140.69

Output:
~$ sudo wvdial
