easypeasy and BBC iplayer

Please don’t think you’re wasting my time , for all the help I was anyway, I choose to try and help because I actually enjoy it and I know Mark does as well and apart from that I get to learn myself so you’re not wasting my time

so if I understand correctly does that mean I can add software to the USB provided it's less than the persistence amount I specified at the start?

Yes you can add software in fact you do almost anything you can do if it was fully installed one difference would be that it may run a little slower than it would if it was fully installed

I've just remembered the only problem is her laptop has only 512mb RAM but she's happy to buy more memory and it seems easy enough to fit, perhaps best to get that first do you think?

Peppermint will run fine on 512mb of ram or at least well enough to test it so my advice would be to try it first as it is and if it works out ok then upgrade the ram

Anyway thank you both again I do appreciate all your efforts.

For my part you’re welcome

Graeme

In truth the answer is I don't know can I check the HDD somehow?

You could try to force fsck (file system check) on next boot using shutdown command:

sudo shutdown -rF now

that would reboot and run fsck.

If still no luck or did not run fsck, then from a Live CD try:
From terminal on Live CD, do:

sudo su

then to list partitions:

fdisk -l | grep /dev

then (for each partition) replace X with drive letter (eg a) and Y with the partition number (eg 1):

fsck -t ext4 /dev/sdXY

Once done reboot to your system and see if all is well (or not)

Hi,

I’ve now put the CD into my friend’s laptop and am running Peppermint from the disk, clearly my old PC was causing most if not all the problems
before, hopefully not any more.

Much to my pleasure it runs both YouTube and BBC iplayer with one slight problem - no sound! I’ve checked as far as I know what to do and can’t see
why this is so - there should be sound but there ain’t!!

This laptop doesn’t look as if it will boot from a USB as I’ve tried but to no avail - it gives boot options as DVD/LAN/FDD? and HDD. Have tried various boot sequences but it doesn’t make any difference.

Also tried to use the USB on an Asus Eee pc notebook but that doesn’t recognise it either.

Any ideas for sorting the sound issue please?

Thanks, Doug.

Troubleshooting issues like this are very difficult from a LiveCD, as we can’t add software.

You can try (with an active internet connection) running:

sudo apt-get install pulseaudio pulseaudio-utils pavucontrol

now see if audio works.

But you must remember, even if it does, that fix will NOT survive a reboot.

Can you give us the make/model of your friends laptop ?

Hi, Mark

At least there seems to be progress!!!

Her laptop is a Toshiba Satellite Pro P100.

I’ll try what you suggest pity it won’t boot from the USB as I understand you can add stuff into that without loading it onto the laptop.

Will post results in a few moments.

Cheers, Doug.

go to

menu > Sound & Video > PulseAudio Volume Control

and mess around in there to see if you can get sound working.

meanwhile, is there more to the model number than P100 ?

Hi, Mark

Also has the following PSPA4E-002001EN

When I go into menu-sound & video it shows

media player
music player
sound mixer

If i go into sound mixer I get ALSA mixer and four bars two say master two capture with an unlocked padlock below.
I’ve followed the help and as far as I can tell put the volume to max. I think it was anyway but is this the thing you
were referring to?

Doug

No it’s not … I’m guessing PulseAudio can’t be installed in a “Live” session then.

I’ll see if I can dig anything up about that laptop … doubt if we’ll get Audio working in a “Live” session, but maybe I can find out if audio is fixable (or not) if you install.

Hi, Mark

I posted another message just after the last one but it’s not here for some reason. so here’s the gist of it again.

I decided to try Peppermint out on my wife’s laptop as she is away today and it worked fine both sound and picture excellent in both iplayer and you tube. I then tried Linux mint 16, which I also had a copy of, on her machine and again it worked fine.

Don’t pretend to understand this especially as when using XP on my friends laptop it plays iplayer and Youtube perfectly!!

I’m baffled but then that’s nothing new.

Cheers,

Doug.

It does seem sound is an issue with that particular laptop see here http://www.linlap.com/toshiba_satellite_p100 (read under Notes) but it does suggest there is a workaround and no saying it wont work with pulseaudio which does solve a lot of sound issues in Linux

Graeme

Hi, Graeme

Typical isn’t it the very machine I’m trying to use has a sound issue!!

May just have to accept using this machine and Peppermint isn’t practical in the end.

Cheers,

Doug.

May just have to accept using this machine and Peppermint isn't practical in the end

I wouldn’t say that just yet this suggests it will work with pulseaudio soundcard - No Sound Using Ubuntu 12.10 on Toshiba Satellite P100 - Ask Ubuntu

Drivers are being updated all the time the first link I posted goes back to 2007 so it could well have been sorted by then to be honest I’d be surprised if it wasn’t but you may have to to throw caution to the wind and install it so you can try it with pulseaudio but I would wait till Mark or someone smarter than me chimed in first if there’s a way to fix it Mark will find it

Good luck

Graeme

Hi. Graeme

I hope it can be made to work otherwise my friend is either going to have to buy a new laptop or upgrade hers with W7
and some extra memory at the very least!!

Cheers,

Doug.

Yeah it’s a shame, sound seems to be the only problem with these laptops and from what I’ve been reading not only with Linux but a lot of Windows users are reporting similar sound issues , something to do with the bios I believe

Anyway good luck

Graeme

Hi, Graeme

I did some digging on the internet yesterday and although it mentions sound issues with this laptop and windows nothing about Linux and more to the point no fix!!

Looks as if Mark has had no luck either so I shall have to tell my friend it’s a new laptop for her with the less than loved (apparently) Windows 8 - assuming she’s got some spare cash!

It seemed a good idea at the time as they say.

Cheers.

Doug.

Sorry, I’ve been busy(ish).

I guess the only way to be certain would be to install Peppermint and try to fix the audio.

it most likely CAN be fixed, just a matter of how much work to do so … but we’re here to help if you wanna give it a go.

It could be that installing pulseaudio fixes the problem … as there seem no NEW reports of problems

or it might need a “quirk” adding to the hda-intel driver.

or as this LinLap page says:

http://www.linlap.com/toshiba_satellite_pro_p100

we may need to extract and edit the DSDT table

Hi, Mark

No criticism of you intended I assure you, I’m grateful for all the time and effort you have put in it’s just frustrating that this
laptop seems to have problems.

I will have to ask her if she is happy for me to load it on as once on I can’t remove it presumably?

I suppose if I used her XP recovery disks that would get rid of it but then I would have to install all the service packs
for XP and given where XP is now it seems hardly worth it.

I could suggest she gets extra memory and installs W7 but when I looked on the internet it seems this laptop even had
sound issues with that - unless I’m getting confused!

I’ll give her a call and see what she says she may think it’s worth it anyway.

Thanks, again.

Cheers,

Doug.

Depending on the capacity of her hard drive (and space left) We could try setting up a dual boot setup, so she still has XP whilst we try figuring out Linux/Audio

And YES it can be removed if it doesn’t work.

Have you by any chance got an external HDD … theree’s a good chance an external USB hard drive would work even on systems that won’t boot from a LiveUSB stick (it’s to do with the USB stick being seen by the BIOS as “removable media”).

Also at this stage it’s an issue of “accessibility” … to do this, you’d probably require access to her laptop for a while, whilst we figure it out.

Hi, Mark

I was thinking of dual booting with XP but assumed I couldn’t remove Peppermint afterwards and leave XP in place without re-installing XP from scratch.

Her laptop is only 80gig but there is at least half or more unused so that isn’t an issue and I don’t think she would mind if I kept it for a few days either.

I do have an external HDD but it belongs to 'er indoors and she uses it for her work (she’s self employed) and I’m not allowed near it
on pain of death!! Hence the reason I used her laptop to try Peppermint out to see if it worked when she was away for the day.

Not that I’m frightened of her of course - petrified, maybe.

I’ll give my friend a ring and take it from there hopefully with your help and patience we might crack it.

However, if it gets to be a real bind just say so I don’t expect you to waste too much time on this I’m sure you have better things to do.

Cheers,

Doug.
