Is it a powered USB hard drive, or does it get its power directly from the USB port only ?
It is one you plug into the laptop then it should show up to access the files and mp4 videos. I have 2 the same. Will my scanner work? I use this a lot and also I can’t get the external CD drive to work.
I would like to know how I create documents- this is the sort of thing I was doing on the laptop:text documents
scanning my artwork in and saving it onto my maxtor portable hard drive, uploading pics into wordpress etc
listening to mp3s from portable hard drives
watching mp4 vids from a portable hard drive
Documents you’d create online with something like Google Docs
or Possibly with Microsoft Office online (you’ll need a free Outlook email account for this)
The external HDD should work if powered, or plugged into a powered hub (the USB ports on the Chromebook may not have enough power on their own).
Scanning and printing may be better done via the netbook … though it may be possible to print fro the Chromebook.
Plug the USB hard drive into the Chromebook
Now in Chrome go to
chrome://system
Scroll down and expand “lsusb”
and post what’s listed there.
Where is chrome://system? I don’t know how to find it Mark…
I put both cds in and nothing happens at all- just stays on error unknown file system. The shift key thing didn’t work either.
If you can post the make and model of the laptop and net book I will check to see if I have a suitable memory chip. I have a number of old Ram chips on hand.
Thanks very much Tramlink. It is windows xp home edition hp hp mobile data system compaq nx6325.
I am arranging with the LUG guy to come and see if he can do anything with the laptop. I have a feeling it is dead tho- just hope he can retrieve my files.
From what I can see the laptop is fitted with 512mb but you can install up to 4GB of memory. I will check my box tomrow.
thank you. do you know where chrome://system is that Mark mentioned to check the HD?
Ok I can see the files but they won’t open
So did you put chrome://system in to the chrome search bar (where you enter the internet address www.xxx)
enter
chrome://system
into the address bar of the Chrome browser … then hit enter.
Did that and a page came up about system
So do what I said to do :-\
Sorry Mark, got a headache from all these new computing things. I expanded "lsusb- what next? The LUG guy is here looking at the old laptop.
a) is the USB hard drive attached
and if so
b) what is listed under lsusb ? (ie. what appeared when you clicked “expand lsusb”)
yes it is plugged in and this was listed:

Okay it looks like it’s being discovered, so maybe it has a filesystem the Chromebook doesn’t understand
According to this:

EXT4 support was recently removed from ChromeOS
Can you plug it into the Mint netbook, access the drive, then post the output from:
sudo fdisk -l
and
sudo blkid
and
mount
