The Goosberry board is now on sale, and they still have 455 out of 500 up for grabs … don’t expect them to last long, so if you want one go to their website NOW: http://gooseberry.atspace.co.uk/?page_id=31
That’s exactly how I feel … I kinda want one, but I doubt if there will be time for me to decide between a Gooseberry or getting a second hand netbook (for son) and playing with the Pi for now.
[EDIT]
337 left … so it’s slowing, but the Americans will get home from work soon, so it may pick up again … then there’s always the “something for the weekend sir”
297 left today (13:98 14/07/12) … so it’s definitely slowed.
I’d buy one if it wasn’t for the lack of USB ports, and the need for a USB On-The-Go adapter and powered USB hub … not to mention the unavailability of anything other than Android ICS (so far).
I think these would have sold out in ten minutes if they had a working Linux image available for download … without one, it’s just another Android device at present, and considering you can get an Android ICS 7" fondle slab for £40 more (or probably less), I can’t see the point at present … they’re asking people to take their word that Ubuntu will be available some time in the future, but you can’t KNOW for sure :o
The Sumvision Astro+ 7 Tablet PC (linked above) also seems to have a slightly higher spec … and probably comes with a better guarantee and/or return policy … and for the extra £39.99 you get a touchscreen, a case, and the leads.
Looking at the button and port positions on the Goosberry board and comparing the spec … it looks like it’s the board from the earlier Sumvision Cyclone Astro (aka. Ployer Momo9, or VeeDee D10).

Oh, I was tempted, but as you I am still looking around. For the extra 30 odd quid you can get something which will be able to work out of the box.
Currently I am looking at the Mini X TV Box H24
Linux images made to work with the MK802 also work with the Mini X
You can get ith here for £69.99 with free shipping (Tax and Import Duty may be due payable):
http://store.cloudsto.com/mini-droid-android-4-tv-box/mini-droid-android-4-tv-box-detail.html
Box includes:
Remote Controller
European power supply(100-240V)
AV Cable
HDMI Cable
WiFi Antenna
Now you’ve done it … I was (quite literally) just about to order the Sumvision Astro+ Tablet, and now I’m torn again (with that apparently having working Linux images) … godammit, too many to choose from.
A 1GB RAM option would have been nice, as they have with the MK802 Mini PC … which is also still an option I suppose.
[EDIT]
I still like the idea of the Sumvision though (screen and battery thrown in for an extra tenner) … at the very least it can be used as a stand alone device, and hasn’t got that weird VAT message about you being liable for Import duties etc.
The only thing holding me back is not being able to find out if it can boot from SD, which would probably end up with Linux images being developed … If I knew for sure it would run Linux I’d buy one right now.
But with the Mini X already having Linux images you’ve certainly made me pause for thought (again) … dunno whether I should thank you for that or not ???
If I could get my hands on some board layout diagrams for the Goosberry then that might make the difference.
As it is it just does not make sense of buying it blindly.
Also the number of peripherals you would need to buy before you can even fire it up.
But with the Mini X already having Linux images you've certainly made me pause for thought (again) .. dunno whether I should thank you for that or not ???
But just look at the number of standard connections!!! (so tempting)
BTW, do you think someone's been reading our topics:
Dunno if that’s any use to ya ? … and it may turn out the Chinese are very secretive … AFAIK even Gooseberry have had problems getting some info from the board manufacturer ???
Thanks for all that info, but i think I will give it a miss this time.
If it is that difficult to obtain information about the Gooseberry tablet pc board,
then it will be even more difficult to re-purpose it into something that is useful to me.
With more and more Linux distributions becoming available that can run on the MK802 Mini PC
therefore on the Mini X (with all those connections), the decision is becoming easier.
You’re right of course … after initially looking promising, I think the Goosberry will ultimately fail … they’ve not sold out of the initial 500 yet, so the community will be small, and it needs a community (or corporation) to develop the images, docs, etc.
Any hard core devs would probably have realised there are better options … or been put off by the lack of schematics/basic info/etc.
I don’t think that will happen for the Gooseberry … if they could have got them out in numbers BEFORE the RasPi, the story would probably have been very different.
The Gooseberry IMHO is one of those things that looks great on the surface … but when you stop to think about it…
And they gave people time to think about it … although Peppermint was happy enough in 512MB, so it’s still an option … I’d just be happier with 1GB
[EDIT]
I’d give serious consideration to the Mini X, if it had a 1GB version
Well it looks like it is too late to change your mind, the Gooseberry board is sold out.
But on the other hand you’ll be able to buy as many Raspberry Pi’s as you want: http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/1588
Yup, they’ve also released an “official” Rapbian image with hardfp (floating point done in hardware rather than software) that is supposed to speed up things like web browsing etc.
I’ll be trying that out as soon as I get the chance … and I’ll try to get round to your “streaming video” question too … sorry, aint had much time to play

Wot, no time to play? ;D
There is no time restriction on this, whenever you can get around to it (heck I am even contemplating to get one for myself)
Slightly different account on the sale progress of the Gooseberry:
The Gooseberry Board is offered for 40 British pounds, which translates to about $62. However, the board was sold out within a few hours after launch and there was no information if and when more supply will come online.

Hmm... It was more like few days rather than hours. ;)
