Hi Jay, it’s a feature of forums, or at least the Discourse forum software. As posts are all public and form public discussions, closing accounts tend to be irreversible and can be disruptive so it’s generally down to moderators.
Firstly, you have control over the content you’ve created, so you should find in your profile settings there is an option to download an archive of content you have created, and you should be able to visit any post or comment you’ve made and delete it. (if you have posts you no longer want to be visible)
If you want the account to be deactivated to the extent you no longer have control over either it or the content you’ve created, a moderator can do this for you, but just be aware that the process can’t be undone.
When an account is removed by a moderator, by default all posted content against that account is anonymized before the account is deleted, this is so other comments and posts by other people still make sense.
So, if there’s an issue I can help with then please ask away.
Otherwise if you could just check there’s no content you wish to remove first, then confirm either here or on a direct message, I can close the account for you. The process isn’t intended to be painful, it’s just a bit permanent.
