HP Deskjet 3070A

Hmm … is the hplip version in Synaptic 3.11.7 ? … as you appear to have 3.11.10 installed … did we install that manually at some point ?

Is there also some reason you haven’t upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 yet ?

yes, I think we did.

Is there also some reason you haven't upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 yet ?
Just don’t want to...yet, I'm happy with 11.10 for now. May do when I eventually get the NAS drive I'm after then I can do a dual boot of Ubuntu (11.10 & 12.04) and possibly XP Pro

Can you print ATM, but just not scan ?

Yes, I can just print.

Have you still got the emails you mentioned here:
http://linuxforums.org.uk/index.php?topic=9695.msg69608#msg69608

and are you sure nothing else on the network has an IP address thatt conflicts with the printer/scanner ?

I should have, they are for something important so I wouldn’t have deleted them.
And, no I dont think there’s anything conflicting with it’s IP address.

can you either attach them to your next posting, or PM them to me, or email them to me.

Can you also send the output from:

sudo sane-find-scanner

and

scanimage -L

Will do as soon as I have found them

sudo sane-find-scanner

sudo sane-find-scannerpeter@Petes-ubuntu-pc:~$ sudo sane-find-scanner
[sudo] password for peter:

OK, just spotted your emails … I’ll go through them in a bit …

BUT …

If I were you I’d give serious consideration to switching to Ubuntu 12.04 … eventually you’re going to have to, and as it contains hplip 3.12.2 by default (so the HPLIP Toolbox will also work) it’s going to be MUCH easier to set up your printer/scanner … not to mention 12.04 is an LTS so will be supported for 5 years

11.10 was IMHO not one of Ubuntu’s better releases.

just concerned as to the stuff I’ve got installed, will they all work with 12.04. What happens on an update from 11.10 to 12.04.
Will I lose anything?
Other installed desktop, Gnome. All my installed programs. I dont want to have to go through what I did when I installed 11.10, installing everything again…

Here’s how I see it … in april next year support for 11.10 will cease, so I’d be happy to stick with 11.10 until I hit a problem, then rather than sort the problem, I’d use that as the opportunity to upgrade.

Sorting any problems will take time, as will installing 12.04 … but why do both … which you WILL have to do eventually

If you say what you considered “awkward” whilst installing 11.10, we may be able to mitigate it somewhat for 12.04 by keeping copies of some of the 11.10 confg files such as keeping a copy of fstab (for reference), and the Ushare config file, and in my case but not yours, I’d also keep a copy of the /etc/openvpn directory, etc.

On a system with problems, I’d go for a fresh install rather than an upgrade of the OS … but as I said, I’d take copies of certain files to make it easier … upgrading a system with problems is liable to end up with a broken system with a higher version number  … besides which, I’m a fan of fresh installs anyway.

You’ll also be surprised how much easier printer configuration with the HPLIP Toolbox is than without it … and there’s no way to get it working on your system with 11.10 and the upgraded hplip you need for your printer.

Anywho … If you’d prefer to try installing hplip 3.12 as a fix for your broken hplip 3.10 … theoretically it should uninstall 3.10, then install itself … let me know and and we’ll go from there … but as I said, I’d give serious consideration to taking this as an opportunity to move to 12.04 which will work with your printer/scanner “out-of-the-box”

I can see your point, waiting till the end of support for 11.10 before moving over to 12.04, I will no doubt encounter more problems before I have to switch.
Your comment on the printer sways my thoughts toward 12.04 a bit. Also, the amount of programs I’ve installed will be cut down when I switch to 12.04 with me installing only the ones I actually use rather than installing a program and trying it and then not using it because I dont like it and just leaving it on my system, wasting space.

what happens on an upgrade to the programs installed in the previous version, will they be gone/broken due to it been a newer version?

Theoretically an “upgrade” will replace all installed programs and libraries (packages) to the newer versions … so NO, nothing gets uninstalled.

In practice, an upgrade is usually not as smooth as a fresh install, and may amplify any problems you have on the system.
(in exactly the same as a Windows OS “upgrade” won’t result in the system being as quick as a fresh install, and can go totally wrong if there are any problems with te system prior to the upgrade)

It also won’t clear up unused or orphaned packages … which is why I tend to favour fresh installs … but as I said there are some things that having copies of will make things a bit easier.

I will have to find somewhere to copy my music and documents and anything else I want to keep to before I install 12.04.
That’s why I really want to get the NAS drive, I wont have this problem any moew.

Aren’t they all of separate drives ? … I thought you had multiple drives ?

I do;
500GB System & personal stuff (docs & Music)
250GB Wiped so I can transfer audiobooks from System drive
1TB Films
2TB TV Series

I just realised, I have a spare 250GB that I tried to include in my set-up yesterday but it wouldn’t boot up due to it been on SATA 5 & 6 where if you remember, I said about them having to be ‘switched on’. You said it would be on the BIOS, I checked but couldn’t find ANYTHING to switch them on in. I can’t for the life of me remember where I read about them needing to be activated.

I could stick it back in my tower and just swap the leads from my current boot drive to the 250GB one and install 12.04 on it. Later, when I eventually DO get my NAS drive, I could connect both up as I can select which drive boots in the BIOS.

If all your personal data is on separate drives to the 11.10 / partition, why are you worried about just overwriting 11.10 with 12.04 ?

You miss-understood;
500GB System & personal stuff (docs & Music)
250GB Wiped so I can transfer audiobooks from System drive
The personal stuff (docs & Music) is STILL on the System drive

I am just sorting out burning 12.04 onto a disc.

So why don’t you just use the 250GiB drive to install the new Ubuntu?

250GB Wiped so I can transfer audiobooks from System drive
Just install to that and mount the 500GiB drive as your home partition. Later on you can delete the system stuff and keep just the personal stuff.

New topic might be a good idea.

New topic, good point as it’s gone from HP Printer to Ubuntu 12.04 to installing HD’s lol
On abt HD’s, I just booted up and ran ‘Disk Utility’ and realised the HD I just plugged in is an NTFS HD and I removed the NTFS program…

On that note, sub topics could be considered closed!
If you could transfer the relevant stuff to new topic…
How do I make the 500GB my home partition, how easy is it in the 12.04 install? willit affect my 11.10 installation?
