I cannot access my Desktop

I just got an Acer ES1-512-C915 yesterday running on Linpus Linux LiveCD Edition v9.2 b140411.

All attempts to access my desktop from this OS Linpus 3.4.46 proves abortive. I am stuck at [root@localhost /]# and this is my first time of using such an OS.
Please, I need help from anyone who can assist me.

You’re not going to get a working graphical desktop with Linpus Lite 9 … you’d be MUCH better off installing some other Linux distribution.

We can help you with that if you want ?

Hi Mark,
I will very much appreciate that, how do I go about that as it has being a frustrating effort - buying a new laptop and having to face this kind of challenge.

Looking forward to reading from you asap.

Okay, do you have access to another PC, and if so is it Windows or Linux ?

Do you have a USB stick of say 2GB or larger

[s]and do you know if your PC can boot from a USB stick ?
(if you’re unsure, how old is your PC ?)

If it won’t boot from a USB stick, do you have any blank DVD recordable disks ?[/s]

Apparently it CAN bot from a USB stick

So which Linux distro would you like to try ?

My suggestions would be either

Linux Mint

Ubuntu

PeppermintOS ← I help create this one so it’d obviously be MY choice, but that doesn’t mean it’d suit everyone

Hi Mark,
Yes, I have another PC and it runs on Vista.
I have a USB stick of 2GB capacity.
I will go with your choice of Linux distro.

Okay then, on the Vista PC download the Peppermint 6 64bit ISO image from here:
http://peppermintos.com/iso/Peppermint-6-20150904-amd64.iso

Also download Win32 Disk Imager from here:
http://skylink.dl.sourceforge.net/project/win32diskimager/Archive/Win32DiskImager-0.9.5-binary.zip

Once you have both, use Win32 Disk Imager to write the Peppermint-6-20150904-amd64.iso file to the USB stick.

You should then be able to boot from that USB stick.

Let me know when you have a working USB stick and are able to boot from it … or if you have any problems.

The procedure is the same for any of the distros I mentioned, so if you’d prefer one of the others just use their ISO image instead.

Thanks Mark, Will let you know about my progress asap.
How do I make Win32 Disk Imager to write the Peppermint-6-20150904… file to the USB???

BR

You just point it at the Peppermint ISO you downloaded, and your USB stick … it’s pretty self-explanatory, but here’s a video anyway.

! No longer available

Thanks Mark.
I have downloaded Disk Imager and peppermintOS
The Linux Laptop prompted - Create a live USB disk (yes or no)?
Warning: If you answer yes, the data on your USB disk will be destroyed!!!
I typed yes and the following happened -
Creating Partitions…
Copying Files…
Successfully create a bootable USB disk!!!
[root@localhost /]#

What do I do next please??

I’m a bit baffled by this

The Linux Laptop prompted - Create a live USB disk (yes or no)?

Surely it was the Vista PC that you created the LiveUSB stick on ?

I created the Live USB disk from the Linux machine.
Am I suppose to boot from the Vista Machine??

How can you have created it on the Linux PC ? … Win32 Disk Imager is a Windows program ?

So sorry and please be patient with me as I am doing this for the first time but please how do I make the USB bootable on my vista??
I apologise once again for all the inconveniences.

You’re not supposed to boot it on the Vista PC … you’re only supposed to use Win32 Disk Imager on the Vista PC to create the LiveUSB stick

did you use Win32 Disk Imager (on the VistaPC) to write the Peppermint ISO image to the USB stick ?

And no need to apologise … I’m here to help

I did not boot it from the vista
I used the Disk Imagerto write the peppermint ISO image to the USB stick (A folder - efi was created on the USB stick).
I then removed the USB stick from the Vista Machine and on to the linux machine and thats when i Had -

[root@localhost /]#

and then I asked you what steps I should take to proceed??

You should not have been presented with this:

The Linux Laptop prompted - Create a live USB disk (yes or no)? Warning: If you answer yes, the data on your USB disk will be destroyed!!! I typed yes and the following happened - Creating Partitions..... Copying Files.... Successfully create a bootable USB disk!!! [root@localhost /]#

Recreate the Peppermint LiveUSB stick on the Vista PC using Win32 Disk Imager again.

Once it’s created, insert it into the Acer, then turn on the Acer … as soon as you turn the Acer on hit F12 … this should take you to the boot device selection screen … select the USB stick as the boot device and hit enter

You should be presented with a screen at asks if you want to “Try Peppermint” or “Install Peppermint” … select “Try Peppermint” and you should end up at the Peppermint desktop that has a single icon on it labelled “Install Peppermint”

Let me know when you’re there.

If at any stage the Linux PC offers to create a LiveUSB again, say NO

The laptop is not responding to the F12 key (My laptop is a German Keyboard).
I have tried several times but it does not work.

Try the F9 or F2 key

It has to be pressed as soon as to turn on the PC (when you see the “Acer” screen)

See here if you need to enable the F12 key
https://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3182/~/why-cant-i-get-the-f12-boot-menu-to-work-on-my-notebook-or-netbook%3F

There are also some steps outlined for your model here:

but all you need to do is enable the “F12 Boot Menu” option … SAVE the changes … reboot … and hit the F12 key

the other option would be to move USB HDD to the top of the boot order.

The F2 key worked and then I had to enable the F12 key as a boot key and then only it worked.
I have Install peppermint now appearing on my desktop, do I click on it??
