Installing GIMP On 11.10

I am trying to RE-Install GIMP through the repo after it was removed by a partial upgrade.
I get this;
The following packages have unmet dependencies:

No as I dont want to pur 12.04 on the laptop. see other thread on LO

If you ran a partial upgrade, then there’s obviously a dependancy/repo issue somewhere. By reading the output you’ve posted as well, it looks like it needs a lot of liberies/dependancies too which aren’t installed.

You’re still on 11.10 right? You can check by running:

lsb_release -a

Have you checked the if Backports are enabled.
There should be a later version of GIMP than 2.6 you got now,with matching dependencies.

Hold on … is this even a GIMP issue ?

It looks to me like it’s a gimp-gmic and gimp-gutenprint issue.

Is GIMP a more recent version being installed from a PPA ? … but gimp-gmic and gimp-gutenprint are the originals ?

Try:

sudo apt-get remove --purge gimp-gmic gimp-gutenprint

then

sudo apt-get update

then

sudo apt-get install gimp

Alternatively … fire up Synaptic and select Edit>Fix Broken Packages

Somewhere you’ve installed gimp (and a load of other stuff) from a PPA that’s no longer available.

Have you got the GetDeb repository added by any chance ?

What’s the contents of:

gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

and the output from:

ls -a /etc/apt/sources.list.d

and the output from:

sudo apt-get update

.

I run

sudo apt-get remove --purge gimp-data
sudo apt-get install gimp

And it goes through the install of Gimp but when I try and run Gimp, it shows up at the bottom as starting and then just vanishes with no error report.

I don’t think the ‘GetDeb’ repo is on here! not heard of that before…
Can I get it from the Ubuntu Software Centre?

This is a %^*ing mess …

You have PPA’s (granted disabled ones) that contain stuff for the GIMP that’s backported from 12.10 to 12.04 … yet you say you’re on 11.10

You also have PPA’s that are for 12.04

and disabled PPA’s for LibreOffice and GIMP … which probably installed a load of stuff before being disabled.

If you are going to add PPA’s … make sure they are single package PPA’s … and always ppa-purge them before disabling them and installing software that is contained in them from another source.

OK, lets try to sort this mess out.

Fire up Synaptic Package Manager, and go to Settings>Repositories>Other Software (tab)

Make sure these repositories are ticked (don’t change any others, just tick these if they aren’t already)

http://ppa.launchpad.net/pmjdebruijn/gimp-release/ubuntu oneiric main
http://ppa.launchpad.net/pmjdebruijn/gimp-release/ubuntu oneiric main (Source Code)

Once those are enabled, close Synaptic.

Open a terminal and run:

sudo apt-get update

then

sudo ppa-purge ppa:pmjdebruijn/gimp-release

then

sudo ppa-purge ppa:alex-p/notesalexp-precise

then

sudo apt-get update

then

sudo apt-get remove --purge babl gegl gimp gimp-plugin-registry gmic ufraw libbabl

then

sudo apt-get autoremove

then

sudo apt-get clean

Then go back into Synaptic Package Manager, and if not greyed out click Edit>Fix Broken Packages

Close Synaptic again … and back in the terminal run

sudo apt-get update

then

sudo apt-get install babl gegl gimp gimp-plugin-registry gmic ufraw libbabl

Any errors, post them … no errors, try GIMP.
